Requirements
  • High school diploma or GED equivalency.
  • Three years of sworn law enforcement experience, including at least one year of experience working in the Lake County Sheriff's Office, or five years of sworn law enforcement experience, including at least two years of supervisory experience.
  • A valid Colorado driver's license issued by the Department of Motor Vehicles at the time of appointment.
  • A Colorado State Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training Basic Certificate, or an equivalent state examination transferable to Colorado, maintained throughout employment.
  • Qualification for security clearance through a background investigation, including medical and psychological evaluations and fingerprinting.
  • Ability to qualify for deputization by the Lake County Sheriff's Office.
  • Ability to work irregular hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays; work overtime as necessary; and travel within and outside the county.
  • Ability to complete required additional training, including firearms orientation and range training, and requalify to carry duty firearms regularly.
  • Ability to maintain peace officer qualifications required by the State of Colorado.
  • Knowledge of employee supervision, work planning, assignment, review, evaluation, discipline, and staff training.
  • Knowledge of leadership, group interaction, budget administration, law enforcement, crime prevention, patrol, courthouse operations and security, criminal investigation, pursuit and apprehension, arrest and custody, applicable laws and regulations, evidence handling, agency functions, equipment operation and maintenance, court procedures, record keeping, report preparation, communication, safety protocols, customer service, computers, and relevant software.
  • Ability to develop and implement goals, objectives, policies, procedures, and work standards.
  • Ability to select and supervise staff, provide training and development opportunities, and evaluate performance.
  • Ability to interpret and ensure compliance with federal, state, and local policies, procedures, laws, and regulations.
  • Ability to identify problems, analyze information, and develop and present recommendations for solutions.
  • Ability to organize, implement, and direct day-to-day law enforcement operations and perform complex law enforcement activities.
  • Ability to assess difficult or emergency circumstances and direct appropriate response strategies.
  • Ability to safely use and care for firearms.
  • Ability to make presentations to authoritative groups and testify in court.
  • Ability to respond to complaints and inquiries from citizens, staff, and outside organizations.
  • Ability to prepare accurate reports, records, correspondence, and other documents.
  • Ability to use computer systems, software applications, and modern business equipment.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, orally and in writing.
Responsibilities
  • Supervise and review the work of staff on an assigned beat, substation, or organizational unit; train staff, evaluate performance, counsel employees, recommend initial disciplinary action, and assist in selection and promotion.
  • Develop goals, objectives, policies, procedures, and standard operating procedures for assigned services and programs.
  • Monitor work-unit activities, identify service-delivery improvements, recommend process changes, and implement improvements.
  • Coordinate assigned services and operations with other divisions and outside agencies.
  • Provide staff assistance to management; prepare and present reports; and supervise the maintenance of reports, records, databases, and files.
  • Investigate and respond to citizen complaints and inquiries and recommend corrective actions.
  • Prepare and release information to the public and media in accordance with policy and law.
  • Perform peace-officer duties involving protection of life and property, law enforcement, criminal investigation, crime prevention and suppression, pursuit and apprehension, case preparation, testimony, and public assistance.
  • Provide formal training to staff, assess and document employee fitness for duty, and develop and implement training procedures and standards.
  • Schedule work and authorize leave.
  • Monitor deputies' responses to law-enforcement situations and provide guidance, direction, and technical assistance.
  • Supervise and coordinate crime-scene activities, including crowd control and evidence protection.
  • Perform complex investigations by gathering evidence and interviewing victims, witnesses, and informants.
  • Review subordinate staff records and reports for completion, accuracy, and regulatory compliance; prepare reports and statistical data.
  • Conduct shift briefings and inspect equipment and vehicles for regulatory compliance.
  • Review and approve cases for prosecution and provide testimony.
  • Represent the department and county in meetings with public and private organizations, community groups, contractors, developers, and the public.
  • Ensure staff comply with county and mandated safety rules, regulations, and policies.
  • Perform additional assigned duties, including K9 Sergeant, S.R.T. Team Leader or Assistant Team Leader, Crisis Intervention Team Leader or Assistant Team Leader, Administrative Sergeant, and Public Information Officer.
Desired Qualifications
  • Bilingual proficiency, preferably including Spanish.
  • Current instructor skills certifications, such as firearms, arrest control, or driving skills, may qualify for salary incentives.
  • Experience with postsecondary education, higher learning, or additional training certificates may qualify for incentive pay.
