About the Job

Requirements

  • At least 12 years of technology experience, including deep, hands-on cloud architecture experience at Aetna Technology scale.
  • Expert-level AWS architecture experience across compute, networking, identity, data, and security, plus working proficiency in GCP and Azure sufficient to make multicloud placement and design decisions.
  • Demonstrated ownership of landing zones, reference architectures, and paved-road or golden-path patterns.
  • Strong command of cloud security and zero-trust architecture, including identity, segmentation, and blast-radius reduction.
  • Working knowledge of FinOps and cost-aware architecture, with the ability to connect design decisions to dollar impact.
  • A track record of driving technical outcomes through influence and design authority as an individual contributor.
  • Experience in healthcare, health insurance, or a similarly regulated industry.
  • Hands-on background with AI/ML platform infrastructure, including model serving, multi-model orchestration, and supporting compute and data patterns.
  • Relevant cloud certifications, such as AWS Solutions Architect Professional.
  • Experience with infrastructure as code and automated policy or guardrail enforcement.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent experience.

Responsibilities

  • Own Aetna Technology cloud reference architectures, including landing zones, account and subscription structure, networking, identity, and workload patterns, with AWS as the primary platform and GCP or Azure supported by exception.
  • Set the multicloud position by defining which workloads run where and why, and establishing placement criteria rather than defaulting to team preference.
  • Design and maintain the paved road, including golden patterns, modules, and guardrails that enable teams to ship without re-solving established problems.
  • Serve as the escalation point for the most difficult cloud design decisions across the portfolio, working deeply with engineering teams when needed.
  • Embed zero-trust, identity, and network-segmentation patterns into reference architectures so security is inherited by default.
  • Define resilience and workload-placement standards, including availability targets, failure isolation, and blast-radius reduction for business-critical systems.
  • Own cloud cost architecture by applying FinOps discipline to design decisions and explaining their cost implications in concrete dollar terms.
  • Provide the cloud architecture underpinning Aetna Technology AI capabilities, including compute, data access, model serving, and multi-model orchestration patterns.
  • Partner with AI platform teams on infrastructure and guardrails for running AI workloads securely and cost-effectively at scale.
  • Author cloud standards enforced as automated gates and paved-road defaults rather than as a review queue.
  • Contribute to architecture governance, including reference architectures, technology radar input, and design reviews, in partnership with Enterprise Architecture.
  • Evaluate emerging cloud-native services across AWS, GCP, and Azure and make directional recommendations on adoption.
  • Translate cloud architecture trade-offs into clear, decision-oriented narratives for senior technology leaders and peer architects.
  • Coach Solution Architects and senior engineers through design reviews and system-level reasoning, without direct reporting relationships.
  • Act as a technical partner to strategic cloud vendors and internal platform teams.
