Requirements
  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Certification as a Certified Professional Coder, Certified Outpatient Coder, or Certified Coding Specialist–Physician-based is required.
  • A minimum of 2–3 years of outpatient coding experience is required, including at least 1 year focused on cardiology or cardiovascular procedures.
  • Familiarity with ambulatory surgery center billing rules and payer guidelines for outpatient surgical centers is required.
  • Strong knowledge of cardiovascular anatomy, terminology, and procedural techniques is required.
  • Proficiency in Current Procedural Terminology, International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision, Clinical Modification, and Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System coding systems is required.
  • The ability to interpret complex operative and procedural reports is required.
  • Proficiency with electronic medical record/electronic health record systems and coding software applications is required.
  • Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States.
Responsibilities
  • Assign appropriate Current Procedural Terminology, International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision, Clinical Modification, and Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System codes for outpatient cardiology procedures, including diagnostic tests, invasive procedures, and interventional cardiology cases performed in an ambulatory surgery center setting.
  • Validate code selection against operative reports, procedure notes, diagnostic results, and physician documentation.
  • Apply modifiers accurately to reflect the ambulatory surgery center environment and ensure correct billing.
  • Ensure coding practices align with Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services guidelines, National Correct Coding Initiative edits, payer-specific policies, and ambulatory surgery center billing rules.
  • Identify and address documentation gaps by querying physicians for clarification when necessary.
  • Participate in regular coding audits and implement corrective actions to maintain accuracy benchmarks of 95% or higher.
  • Work closely with physicians, nurses, and administrative staff to resolve coding-related issues.
  • Provide feedback and education to clinical staff on documentation improvement for cardiology-specific services.
  • Support the billing department with claims-related coding inquiries and appeals.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of coding guidelines, cardiovascular procedures, and ambulatory surgery center-specific regulations.
  • Participate in continuing education and attend training sessions as required to retain certification(s).
Desired Qualifications
  • An Associate’s degree in Health Information Management or a related field is preferred.
  • Specialty certification in cardiology coding, such as Certified Cardiology Coder or Certified Interventional Radiology Cardiovascular Coder, is preferred.
  • Strong attention to detail with high accuracy rates is preferred.
  • Excellent communication skills for physician interaction and documentation clarification are preferred.
