What critics are saying

  • September 2026 layoffs of roughly 80 Indian support staff signal cost cuts before the Valley closing.

Valley National to buy Bluevine for $340M: can banks keep what makes fintechs work?

Valley National Bank plans to acquire fintech Bluevine in a $340 million deal expected to close in early 2027. The New Jersey-based bank gets a technology team that has spent more than a decade building products for small businesses. Bluevine's model has grown a banking account into a broader financial relationship, which Valley would have needed considerable time and investment to build itself. Bluevine gains the scale, balance sheet, banking capabilities, and physical branches of an established bank. Valley is not buying Bluevine only for its customers and deposits, but also for its platform, talent, and capabilities, according to Lifshitz. The harder question is whether Bluevine's product-building instincts and decision-making can survive inside a traditional bank.

Bluevine partners with Coverdash to offer embedded commercial insurance to small businesses

Bluevine, the largest small business banking platform in the US, has partnered with Coverdash to integrate commercial insurance directly into its platform. Bluevine customers can now quote, purchase and manage business insurance — including general liability, workers' compensation, commercial auto, professional liability and cyber coverage — without leaving their accounts. The integration uses Coverdash's embedded technology and connections with over 40 commercial insurance carriers. Customers can compare coverage options, review limits and deductibles, and generate certificates of insurance instantly within Bluevine. The partnership advances Bluevine's goal of creating an all-in-one platform for small business owners. Since 2013, Bluevine has served over 1 million customers and delivered over $17 billion in loans.

Valley National Bank to acquire Bluevine for $340 million.

Valley National Bank to acquire Bluevine for $340 million. September 28, 2026 Valley National Bank has announced it will acquire business fintech Bluevine in a deal worth $340 million (75% cash, 25% stock). Bluevine has 175,000 active small businesses and $2.1 billion in deposits. Doctor of Credit has covered Bluevine in the past and they still offer a $500 business checking bonus. Valley National bank also has frequent bonuses. If you're interested in doing the Bluevine bonus I'd recommend doing that sooner rather than later as that increased offer might have been put out to drive higher sign ups and growth figures before being acquired. Bluevine sale tests Coastal Financial's partner-banking model.

Bluevine sale tests Coastal Financial's partner-banking model. What happened. COASTAL FINANCIAL CORPORATION (NASDAQ: CCB) said Bluevine entered a definitive agreement on September 28, 2026 to be acquired by Valley National Bancorp. The filing says the transaction still needs regulatory approvals and other customary closing conditions. Coastal Financial said it will provide more information with its third quarter earnings. Discover more Financial news subscription Ecology & Environment Trade rumor analysis It also said Bluevine and the Bank have maintained a productive relationship for many years. Key numbers. | Metric | Latest | Change | Source | | Bluevine-related deposits | approximately $447 million | / | SEC 8-K | | Active partner relationships | 22 | / | SEC 8-K | | Date of report | September 28, 2026 | / | SEC 8-K | Why it matters. OptimistFi's case is that Coastal Financial's upside depends on whether its partner-banking engine can keep scaling without turning growth into credit, compliance, or dilution risk. This filing is mixed. Bluevine is a financial technology partner of Coastal Community Bank, and the deal tests that view before closing. As of June 30, 2026, CCBX had 22 active partner relationships across a diversified range of products and services. That points to a broad platform, but the filing is only a snapshot and gives no post-announcement operating data. Coastal Financial said it does not currently expect the transaction or any resulting changes to the Bluevine deposit relationship to have a material adverse effect on the Company's liquidity or funding profile. That is the main claim investors need to weigh against the deposit figures. As of September 25, 2026, approximately $447 million of Bluevine-related deposits were held on the Bank's balance sheet. The filing says those deposits fluctuate in the ordinary course based on customer activity, balance sheet management and use of the Bank's deposit sweep arrangements. The Bank also said its funding alternatives, including the ability to bring sweep deposits back onto its balance sheet, give it flexibility to replace Bluevine-related deposits. That supports the company's view, but it also shows the deposit base could move before closing. What's next. The next scheduled update is the company's third quarter earnings. Investors will watch for any change in the deposit balance, the funding view, or the closing timeline. A reaffirmation of the no-material-adverse-effect view and stable Bluevine-related deposits would support the current read. Any notable shift in deposits or the closing timeline would cut against it.
