Requirements
  • A high school diploma or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Two years of related experience in clinical billing, medical coding, payment posting, claims processing, or a related area.
  • Expertise in clinical billing, claims processes, and payment posting.
  • Knowledge of HIPAA guidelines and working knowledge of electronic medical record systems such as Epic.
  • Knowledge of word processing and Microsoft Excel spreadsheet applications.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal, leadership, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to use sound judgment.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with others.
Responsibilities
  • Accurately post payments received from insurance payers and patients into the medical billing or practice management system.
  • Post claim denials and take necessary actions, such as resubmitting claims or transferring balances to patients.
  • Collect and match payments to patient accounts, ensure the accuracy of financial records, and create reports for designated personnel.
  • Retrieve explanations of benefits for all insurance payments received.
  • Interpret and process electronic remittance advice and explanations of benefits from insurance payers to apply payments correctly.
  • Investigate and resolve issues, exceptions, and discrepancies found during payment posting.
  • Check in patients and assist them with their questions and needs.
  • Verify patients’ insurance eligibility and benefits and obtain referrals or authorizations required for payment.
  • Call patients and insurance companies to investigate insurance and patient benefits.
  • Present and explain dental and medical treatment plans to patients.
Desired Qualifications
  • An Associate’s degree or higher in business administration or a closely related field.
  • Four years of related experience in clinical billing, medical coding, payment posting, claims processing, or a related area.
  • Experience with revenue cycle management.
  • Experience with Epic electronic medical records.
  • AAPC or AHIMA medical coding certification.
  • Extensive understanding of medical billing and Texas Medicaid.
  • Familiarity with electronic medical record systems, specifically Epic, and certification as a billing coder.
  • Knowledge of Texas A&M University rules and regulations.
