Requirements
  • A current Registered Nurse license issued by the state in which services will be provided or a current multi-state Registered Nurse license through the enhanced Nurse Licensure Compact.
  • Obtain Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist certification through the Certification Board for Diabetes Care and Education within two years of the hire date.
  • Obtain Basic Life Support certification within 30 days of the hire date.
  • Have two years of clinical experience, including one year caring for diabetic patients.
  • Have knowledge of relevant scientific principles, established standards of care, and research findings.
  • Have knowledge of procedures and techniques involved in administering routine and special patient treatments.
  • Have knowledge of and appropriately apply the nursing process.
  • Have knowledge of professional nursing theory, practice, and procedure.
  • Be able to communicate clearly with patients, families, physicians, and other employees.
  • Be able to lift, move, stoop, reach, stand, walk, and carry materials and equipment weighing 35 pounds or more.
Responsibilities
  • Identify education needs of the community and people with diabetes.
  • Attend diabetes advisory committee meetings as assigned.
  • Perform patient assessments, deliver education, and evaluate patients' attainment of goals.
  • Assist in maintaining American Diabetes Association certification as applicable.
  • Participate in community outreach and educational support.
  • Advocate on behalf of patients and their families.
  • Communicate relevant questions, concerns, and patient outcomes to primary care providers and members of the multidisciplinary team.
  • Participate in performance improvement activities to assure quality patient care.
  • Complete daily rounds to assess patient status.
  • Ensure all necessary testing and scheduling are complete before procedures.
  • Compile reference materials, summarize data, prepare reports, and draft manuals and educational materials.
  • Lead the planning, implementation, and evaluation of the Outpatient Diabetes and Nutrition Education Program.
Desired Qualifications
  • Have a Bachelor’s degree in Nursing (BSN).
  • Hold certification in diabetic education upon hire.
  • Have five years of clinical nursing experience.
