  • Candidates must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Candidates must have a high school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Candidates must complete the learning program with an 80% passing score on the written and skills performance examination.
  • Candidates must hold Basic Life Support HealthCare Provider certification from the American Heart Association.
  • Candidates must be able to perform prolonged standing and walking; lift, position, push, and transfer patients; lift supplies and equipment; and perform considerable reaching, stooping, bending, kneeling, crouching, lifting, pushing, and pulling of 100 or more pounds.
  • Candidates must complete annual mandatory requirements, including tuberculosis screening, ethics training, safety training, information security training, abuse and neglect training, bloodborne pathogens training when required, assigned coursework, annual competency, age/population-specific competency when applicable, orientation competency when applicable, and unit-specific requirements.
Responsibilities
  • Carry out each patient’s plan of care as it relates to physical needs under the direction of the Registered Nurse.
  • Deliver bedside care using aseptic technique, medical terminology, and patient-care equipment.
  • Assist nurses and physicians with procedures.
  • Operate patient-care equipment safely and maintain knowledge of its use.
  • Retrieve unavailable patient-care items and follow up on patient-care needs.
  • Complete unit clerical duties, including coordinating designated unit activities, transcribing orders, maintaining medical records, and serving as a unit receptionist.
  • Prepare rooms before admissions and after discharges, and complete patients’ belongings lists on admission and transfer.
  • Provide prompt and courteous attention to patients, families, and visitors, and perform purposeful rounding.
  • Perform service recovery activities and refer unusual problems to the Nurse Manager or designee.
  • Check meals after dietary trays are delivered, address late or incorrect trays, and feed or set up trays as needed.
  • Maintain supplies and equipment and notify the appropriate department when needed to maintain a clean and safe environment.
  • Serve as a resource for co-workers, patients and families, medical staff, and ancillary personnel.
  • Apply restraints correctly; monitor circulation, skin integrity, breathing, positioning, range of motion, skin care, toileting, hydration, and socialization needs.
  • Operate cardiac monitors, including switches, alarms, strips, and lead placement.
  • Perform approved point-of-care testing; obtain vital signs; measure abdominal girth, weight, intake, and output.
  • Apply pneumatic air stockings and TED hose, and ambulate, turn, and position patients.
  • Assist with incentive spirometry and coughing/deep-breathing exercises; set up oxygen therapy; monitor pulse oximetry; perform tracheostomy care and oral or stable-patient tracheal suctioning.
  • Place patients on specialty beds, perform sterile and clean dressing changes, and provide pin-site care after Registered Nurse assessment while monitoring traction alignment.
  • Administer enemas, perform straight catheterization, and provide catheter care.
  • Provide hygiene, grooming, mouth care, fresh water, perineal care, and toileting.
  • Collect urine, sputum, blood, and stool specimens as specified.
  • Answer unit phones, provide directions, notify staff of arrivals and unit activities, receive articles, and manage pneumatic-tube carriers.
  • Prepare daily worksheets, confirm appointments, and maintain census information.
  • Enter and communicate admissions, transfers, discharges, room changes, and deaths in the computer system.
  • Assist with specimen labels and requisition orders, and report critical laboratory values.
  • Complete pre-operative checklist, admission data, transfer and discharge paperwork, and death-summary clerical tasks.
  • Review charts and orders, enter and transcribe orders accurately, contact departments for tests and consultations, route physician orders to pharmacy, and use backup systems during computer downtime.
  • Initiate, assemble, organize, thin, and route patient charts and medical records according to hospital procedures.
  • Obtain reports from Registered Nurses, communicate patient-condition changes and complaints, document care, identify problems, suggest solutions, and work through appropriate lines of authority.
  • Follow safety and infection-control policies, practice standard precautions, dispose of hazardous waste, maintain a safe and clean environment, report risk concerns, and empty soiled-linen containers.
  • Deliver timely, high-quality, courteous patient and family service; maintain confidentiality; explain procedures and education; provide shift reports; collaborate with departments; and use resources efficiently.
  • Participate in staff meetings, mandatory education, self-performance evaluation, nursing-unit goals, performance improvement, data collection, action plans, research activities, and additional learning.
  • Provide age-appropriate care by applying growth and development knowledge, interpreting age-specific data, communicating appropriately, involving families in decisions, and meeting the needs of assigned patient groups.
  • Provide specialized care for high-risk patients, including restraint care, pain-management interventions, and abuse or neglect recognition and reporting.
  • Maintain infection-control practices, hand hygiene, dressing changes, invasive-line care, required vaccinations, safe crisis and patient-transport practices, thorough documentation, equipment care, organized work areas, and handoff reports.
  • Communicate respectfully with patients, families, visitors, physicians, colleagues, and business partners; mentor new employees; resolve conflicts constructively; and respond promptly to patient requests.
  • Introduce oneself to patients and families, explain care and procedures, answer call lights, protect privacy and modesty, and keep patients and families informed.
Desired Qualifications
  • Candidates with Certified Nursing Assistant experience or previous hospital experience are preferred.
  • Post-high-school vocational or specialized training is preferred.
