Requirements
  • Graduation from an accredited high school or GED program.
  • Two years of work-related experience.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing and establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, departments, and the general public.
  • Must have current Red Cross First Aid and CPR certification or obtain it within 90 days of hire.
  • Must maintain 40 hours of training annually.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • Must possess certification required by applicable standards of the assigned facility or department.
  • Must possess a valid Texas driver's license with a good driving record.
  • Must pass an extensive background investigation.
  • Must pass mandatory pre-employment drug testing and be subject to random, unannounced drug and/or alcohol testing during employment.
  • Must be able to work in a 24-hour facility, including mandatory overtime, double shifts, shift changes, holdover, and callback assignments.
  • Must pass all applicable physical and written portions of the Juvenile Academy or meet all standards related to the Prison Rape Elimination Act and ethics.
  • Ability to work with juveniles who may have committed dangerous or aggressive acts in an emotionally demanding and stressful environment.
  • Ability to restrain and chase youths in accordance with policies.
  • Ability to work inside a secured facility with potential exposure to hepatitis, tuberculosis, lice, and other diseases.
Responsibilities
  • Provide direct day-to-day supervision to youths in a 24-hour residential facility in a manner that ensures each youth's health, safety, and welfare.
  • Function as a lead juvenile residential officer and assume divisional responsibility in the absence of the shift supervisor.
  • Provide individual and group counseling to youths to promote and increase personal awareness of responsibilities and alternatives.
  • Use critical judgment and make sound decisions during crisis or potentially dangerous situations, conduct crisis intervention counseling, and notify the supervisor of concerns.
  • Enforce facility rules, discipline youths, document behavior and other specific information, and forward documentation to appropriate personnel.
  • Train and evaluate staff and maintain time and attendance records in the absence of a shift supervisor.
  • Transport youths to and from appointments.
  • Dispense required medication in the absence of the nurse or shift supervisor, perform first aid and CPR, and restrain, chase, or carry unruly youths.
  • Conduct inspections, rounds, and drills, including room checks and physical searches of youths.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
