Requirements
  • An Associate’s degree in Respiratory Therapy is required; for the specified alternate site, an associate degree or graduation from a hospital-based program with five years of experience is accepted.
  • A current Respiratory Therapist license in Michigan is required.
  • Registered Respiratory Therapist credentials are required within one year of hire for employees hired after 2004.
  • BLS certification is required within three months of hire, and ACLS, PALS, and AAP-NRP certifications are required within one year according to site-specific requirements.
  • The employee must be able to provide age-appropriate direct patient care, stand or walk frequently, lift light objects up to 50 pounds, assist with heavier patient-moving tasks, and respond quickly during emergencies.
  • The employee must be able to transport patients safely by walking, wheelchair, gurney, crib, or ambulance transport within facilities.
  • The employee must complete required in-services, online learning, education, and minimal working requirements.
Responsibilities
  • Initiate and administer respiratory care to patients with cardiopulmonary abnormalities and deficiencies according to provider prescriptions, policies, protocols, and guidelines.
  • Evaluate patient information, communicate findings to providers and nurses, and recommend therapy changes to resolve patient problems.
  • Evaluate invasive and non-invasive blood gases and communicate ventilator recommendations based on patient evaluation and blood-gas results.
  • Check provider orders for completeness and administer respiratory therapies accordingly.
  • Explain therapies to patients in age-appropriate and understandable terms, assess responses, titrate oxygen therapy, and modify treatment according to protocols.
  • Perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation and assist with Code Blue events using BLS, ACLS, NRP, and PALS guidelines.
  • Assist with or perform tracheal intubation when competency is complete, and assist with bronchoscopies, intubations, and extubations.
  • Maintain, stabilize, suction, secure, and reposition artificial airways, including endotracheal and tracheostomy tubes.
  • Use infant and pediatric resuscitation equipment, including PEEP adaptations and pop-off valves, during emergencies.
  • Provide patient and family education with the healthcare team.
  • Perform pulmonary function testing, EKGs, arterial blood gases, pulse oximetry, end-tidal CO2 monitoring, and transcutaneous oximetry.
  • Perform nasotracheal, endotracheal, and tracheal suctioning and collect samples.
  • Communicate patient diagnoses and therapies accurately during shift reports and accurately charge patients for therapies performed.
  • Supervise and instruct Respiratory Care students, complete the required preceptor course, and support students’ clinical skill development.
  • Maintain and clean respiratory equipment to ensure readiness and supply availability.
  • Orient and instruct new department personnel, nursing staff, students, and respiratory personnel in Respiratory Care procedures.
  • Participate in departmental and hospital-wide process improvement, quality assurance, and performance improvement activities.
  • Adjust work in response to patient census and departmental needs, including overtime or shift changes when necessary.
  • Perform related duties as required or assigned according to site-specific responsibilities.
