Requirements
  • A four-year college or university degree or equivalent in Chemistry, Biology, or a related science is required.
  • Three to five years of related laboratory experience in a laboratory environment is required.
  • Competent knowledge of chemistry practice and theory, including method validation and use of laboratory equipment such as high-performance liquid chromatography, gas chromatography, inductively coupled plasma, ultraviolet, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, and a computer-controlled dissolution tester.
  • Some knowledge of conventional laboratory characterization techniques such as liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry, gas chromatography–mass spectrometry, and nuclear magnetic resonance.
  • Hands-on proficiency with analytical methods and instrumentation.
  • Ability to communicate in written and verbal form and lead effectively in a cross-functional team environment.
  • Some knowledge of applicable Food and Drug Administration and International Council for Harmonisation guidelines.
  • Strong project, organizational, and time-management skills.
  • Computer skills such as Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel.
  • Ability to perform the job safely in accordance with standard operating procedures and good manufacturing practices without endangering the health or safety of self or others.
Responsibilities
  • Perform basic, intermediate, and advanced testing as assigned on raw materials, bulk products, and finished products in support of quality-control release, investigations, method development or improvement, stability studies, or development studies.
  • Perform physical testing techniques such as density, specific gravity, loss on drying, particle size, tablet or fill weight, and similar techniques.
  • Perform chemical testing techniques such as titration, Fourier-transform near-infrared spectroscopy, moisture testing, dissolution testing, ultraviolet testing, and similar techniques.
  • Perform instrumental analytical testing techniques such as gas chromatography, high-performance liquid chromatography, ultra-performance liquid chromatography, inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry, inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry, and similar techniques.
  • Review and verify laboratory documentation for completeness before reporting.
  • Achieve mastery of one or more testing areas and serve as a trainer for new and developing analysts.
  • Lead out-of-specification or other investigations as assigned.
  • Troubleshoot laboratory instrument and method issues, perform repairs, or obtain appropriate outside service.
  • Review, update, and develop job aids, procedures, or methods as assigned.
  • Perform method verification and validation studies in support of method transfer.
  • Collaborate with peers at other sites or groups as needed, including Quality Assurance, Quality Control, Analytical Services, Research and Development, and Technical Operations.
  • Update existing methods to meet compendia requirements or incorporate new technology where appropriate.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Desired Qualifications
  • An advanced degree is a plus.
  • Familiarity with the United States Pharmacopeia and other compendia is a plus.
  • Knowledge of Product Lifecycle Management and Laboratory Information Management Systems is preferred.
