About the job

Requirements
  • Use Python as a working language for data engineering, not only scripting.
  • Use SQL fluently, including window functions, complex joins, and reading and reasoning about execution plans.
  • Work with Spark or PySpark transformations, aggregations, window functions, and user-defined functions, and understand shuffle, skew, and partitioning sufficiently to diagnose slow jobs with the Spark UI.
  • Have equivalent depth in the AWS data stack, including S3, Glue, Athena, Lambda, Step Functions, and IAM; equivalent experience with GCP or Azure is acceptable.
  • Understand lakehouse fundamentals including Parquet, Iceberg or Delta or Hudi, partitioning, compaction, schema evolution, and snapshots.
  • Use Airflow, Dagster, Prefect, or Step Functions for orchestration.
  • Use Docker and be comfortable running workloads on Kubernetes.
  • Use Git and CI/CD and have exposure to infrastructure as code with Terraform or Terragrunt.
  • Understand streaming and CDC concepts, including Kafka, delivery semantics, late and out-of-order data, and idempotent writes.
  • Debug using logs and metrics, investigate failed jobs, and explain root causes.
  • Read and write technical documentation in English.
  • For the middle level, have at least 2 years of dedicated data engineering experience, be solid across most of the listed technologies, and be genuinely strong in two or three areas.
  • For the senior level, have at least 5 years of experience designing, building, and operating Data Lake or data warehouse solutions; design systems other engineers build on, mentor, and carry technical decisions across team boundaries.
  • Have hands-on experience using coding agents such as Claude Code or Codex on production work, including decomposing tasks, supplying context, and iterating to an approvable result.
  • Critically review generated code and be able to explain it line by line; retain responsibility for correctness, cost, and compliance.
  • Be willing to work outside your strongest area and use AI to become productive with unfamiliar tools.
  • A second programming language beyond Python, such as Scala, Java, Go, or Rust, is listed as a bonus.
  • Own infrastructure as code by creating Terraform or Terragrunt modules, rather than only editing existing ones, is listed as a nice-to-have.
  • Experience with dbt or SQLMesh, data contracts, lineage, and data catalog tools is listed as a nice-to-have.
  • Experience with analytical databases such as ClickHouse, Redshift, BigQuery, or Snowflake is listed as a nice-to-have.
  • Experience with data modeling such as Kimball or Data Vault, and with regulated or audited data environments, is listed as a nice-to-have.
  • Experience building complex analytical systems end-to-end is listed as a nice-to-have.
Responsibilities
  • Design and build end-to-end data pipelines, from ingestion from heterogeneous sources through cleaning, transformation, enrichment, normalization or denormalization, and publication, including tests, monitoring, and production ownership.
  • Make and defend architectural decisions for the assigned area, including file or table formats, partitioning, incremental versus full reloads, latency and cost trade-offs, and failure semantics.
  • Translate business cases into requirements, architecture, and code, and challenge requirements when appropriate.
  • Identify both a fast path for experimentation and a stable path for production, and choose appropriately between them.
  • Continuously identify processing that should be simplified, automated, or removed.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience with RAG, embeddings, MCP servers, agent workflows, or evaluations is a bonus; these technologies are used for metadata search, SQL generation over the data lake, data classification, and quality checks.
