About the Job

Requirements

  • Eight or more years of related work experience with an original equipment manufacturer, including successful product launches into volume manufacturing.
  • Mastery of 3D computer-aided design software, preferably SolidWorks, including 2D drawings, simulations, and product data management.
  • Significant experience designing motion control systems with sensors, actuators, and complex mechanisms.
  • Significant experience designing systems for industrial settings, balancing cost and durability over the capital equipment's full depreciation lifespan.
  • Experience with structural and vibration analyses.
  • Detailed knowledge of ASME drafting standards, including GD&T (Y14.5-2009).
  • Detailed knowledge of design for manufacturing and assembly, Six Sigma, and statistical tolerance analysis.
  • Detailed knowledge of failure avoidance methods, including DFMEA, PFMEA, and fault tree analysis.
  • Experience working effectively with customers, component suppliers, and contract manufacturers.
  • Ability to set aggressive yet feasible schedules and milestones for own work and achieve them.
  • Ability to think strategically about safety, design, manufacturing, and reliability risks and their mitigations.
  • High level of technical writing proficiency for specifications, test plans, reports, white papers, and similar materials.
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering.

Responsibilities

  • Advance designs from conceptualization to customer acceptance as a proactive problem solver on a cross-disciplinary product team.
  • Understand customer operational needs and constraints to define system-level requirements and decompose them into appropriate subsystems.
  • Design practical solutions independently, anticipating manufacturability and future maintenance issues.
  • Design and execute tests to compare candidate solutions, identify the best approach, and support the team's conclusion.
  • Transform tested conceptual solutions into robust product designs in coordination with engineering operations, customers, and contract manufacturers.
  • Design and release components and systems using SolidWorks and product lifecycle management systems.
  • Develop production and support documentation, including bills of material, fabrication and assembly drawings, and maintenance instructions.
  • Build hands-on prototypes using shop tools and equipment to iterate ideas and solutions.
  • Travel to suppliers and customers as necessary to support system builds and installations.
  • Collaborate with suppliers, machinists, and contract manufacturers to support on-time delivery and deployment of fully assembled, functional, and tested electromechanical systems to customer facilities.
  • Test and verify prototype systems.
  • Perform system design analyses, including reliability, design for manufacture, design for assembly, and cost reduction.
  • Calculate forces, structural stresses, bearing life, required motor torques, thermal loads, and other critical design parameters for industrial equipment development.
  • Oversee design, development, and test activities among more junior team members, reinforcing existing team standards and influencing new ones.

Desired Qualifications

  • Ability to handle some minimal electrical design, including cable harnesses, wiring diagrams, and grounding strategies.
  • Working knowledge of challenges facing neighboring disciplines to collaboratively solve wire routing, strain management, and cabinet placement problems.
