Santen in Spain: Advancing eye care through long-term know-how.

Santen in Spain: Advancing eye care through long-term know-how. * BRIDGES BY SMS * SHARE Oct 9, 2026 Preventing avoidable vision loss and addressing childhood myopia guide Santen's work in Spain and worldwide. Founded in Osaka in 1890, the Japanese pharmaceutical company develops treatments and partnerships to advance eye care. "Our Japanese heritage gives us something very valuable - a long-term perspective," said Fernando Alvarez, general manager of Santen Spain. Its founding spirit of "Tenki ni sanyo suru" (exploring the secrets and mechanisms of nature in order to contribute to people's health), reflects a commitment to applying nature and science to improve people's health. Its specialized scientific expertise supports a clear purpose: helping people see better and live happier lives. In treating glaucoma, Santen collaborates with the Spanish Glaucoma Society and healthcare organizations on GlauCCare, a hospital certification initiative aimed at raising standards. Alvarez emphasizes earlier diagnosis and stronger coordination throughout care. Childhood myopia is another priority, with regular screening, healthy visual habits and appropriate treatment supporting earlier intervention. Time outdoors forms part of those healthy habits. Santen works with ophthalmologists, patient organizations and the eye care community to support children and families, including through collaboration on the children's booklet Myopia Explorers. These partnerships aim to translate scientific evidence into practical support for patients. "If we want to improve outcomes, we need to understand the patient journey, not just the product journey," Alvarez said. This approach also informs staff development and long-term relationships across Spain's healthcare system. Alvarez attributes Santen Spain's performance to trusted customer relationships, ownership and teamwork. This people-centered culture is also reflected in Santen's recognition under ISO 53800 for gender equality, its recognition as an age-friendly employer and, most recently, its 25th place ranking among the 100 Best Companies to Work For in Spain in 2026 by El Mundo's Actualidad Economica. Spain's highly specialized ophthalmology community and established healthcare system offer opportunities to develop practices that can benefit Santen internationally. Developing talent with a global mindset supports that ambition. "Looking ahead, our ambition is to keep advancing eye health by turning insight and innovation into meaningful solutions, so that more people can see and experience the world more fully," Alvarez said.

Santen China signs exclusive distribution and promotion agreement for five marketed Glaucoma Eyedrops products in the Chinese Mainland.

Santen China signs exclusive distribution and promotion agreement for five marketed Glaucoma Eyedrops products in the Chinese Mainland. April 17, 2026 - Osaka, Japan - Santen Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. (hereinafter Santen) announced today that Santen China has entered into a distribution and promotion agreement with AbbVie for five marketed glaucoma eyedrops in the Chinese Mainland. Under the agreement, Santen China will receive exclusive distribution rights and conduct promotional activities in the Chinese Mainland for Glaucoma Eyedrops Alphagan(R), AlphaganP(R), Lumigan(R), Ganfort(R) and Combigan(R). A pillar of AbbVie's glaucoma eyedrop product portfolio, the brimonidine tartrate ophthalmic solution (Alphagan(R) and AlphaganP(R) features a dual intraocular pressure (IOP)-lowering effect that suppresses aqueous humor production and promotes aqueous humor outflow via the uveoscleral pathway; it is recommended as one of the first-line treatments under Asia-Pacific Glaucoma Society guidelines.[1] These products will synergize with existing Santen prostaglandin-related products while creating a complementary, multi-MoA (Mechanism of Action) glaucoma portfolio and strengthening the Company's business foundation in the China market. Glaucoma is a disease in which the optic nerve is damaged by increased IOP, causing progressive visual field loss; if not treated appropriately, it can lead to blindness.[2,3] As of 2020, the number of patients with primary glaucoma worldwide exceeded 76 million, and this number is expected to exceed 100 million by 2040.[4] The number of glaucoma patients in China numbered more than 21.8 million, leading to 5.67 million cases of blindness as of 2020.[2] By fully leveraging its proven strong commercial presence in China's glaucoma market, Santen will capitalize on this agreement with AbbVie to unleash the growth potential of the glaucoma products. While focusing on addressing clinical challenges in glaucoma treatment, Santen is committed to providing eye care professionals with new therapeutic strategies and approaches, empowering them to elevate the standard of glaucoma treatment in China, and ultimately benefit millions of patients.
