Requirements
  • A bachelor's or master's degree in Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Systems Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
  • At least 10 years of experience in embedded software, medical device software, regulated product development, or software-enabled electromechanical systems with platform reuse across releases.
  • Demonstrated success leading cross-functional software architecture strategy rather than only subsystem design or program execution.
  • Strong background in systems thinking, software architecture, risk management, design controls, cybersecurity, and technology evaluation.

Responsibilities
  • Own the UCC software and connectivity capability roadmap across embedded software, GUI software, operating systems, product security, wireless connectivity, device-cloud data interfaces, diagnostics, service tools, and test automation.
  • Define maturity steps for each software and connectivity domain and align them to product release trains across UCC platforms.
  • Integrate inputs from voice-of-customer feedback, complaints, service data, usability findings, software defect trends, cybersecurity risks, regulatory needs, manufacturing and service constraints, and technological advancements into the roadmap.
  • Lead periodic software and connectivity platform strategy reviews and publish the roadmap with deliverables, decision points, investment needs, and success metrics.
  • Establish software architecture principles, modularity strategy, interface expectations, cybersecurity guardrails, and reuse models across products.
  • Serve as the technical authority for software- and connectivity-impacting changes, including participation in change control boards, architecture reviews, and pre-product governance review technical assessments.
  • Create and maintain reference architectures, design decision records, software platform standards, preferred technologies, and reusable design patterns.
  • Provide go/no-go guidance on software architecture, GUI frameworks, operating systems, wireless connectivity, product security architecture, and device-cloud integration.
  • Establish expectations for real-time behavior, operating system selection, hardware abstraction, firmware updates, fault handling, cybersecurity controls, and software risk mitigations.
  • Define GUI architecture principles supporting consistent user workflows, human factors expectations, clinical and service modes, and configuration management across product families.
  • Establish reusable user-interface patterns, component strategies, framework recommendations, and design guardrails.
  • Guide wireless and wired connectivity architecture, including Bluetooth Low Energy, Wi-Fi, Ethernet, gateway models, pairing and provisioning, offline and online behavior, telemetry models, and device-cloud interfaces.
  • Partner with BD Incada and enterprise connectivity teams on data, application programming interface, telemetry, identity, audit, and interoperability strategies.
  • Define product security architecture expectations, including threat modeling, secure boot and update strategy, authentication, encryption, key management, software bill of materials expectations, vulnerability management, and security design reviews.
  • Influence the software development lifecycle, architecture documentation, code quality expectations, static analysis, continuous integration and continuous delivery, simulator strategy, software-in-the-loop and hardware-in-the-loop testing, and automated regression coverage.
  • Drive platform-level decisions that improve software maintainability, testability, release readiness, serviceability, and long-term sustaining efficiency.
  • Translate the software and connectivity roadmap for product design teams and clarify ownership across embedded software, application software, systems, electrical, cybersecurity, verification, and program teams.
  • Partner with product development leaders, chief technology leaders, technical leads, marketing, innovation, quality, regulatory, human factors, operations, service, and supply chain teams in governance forums and product programs.
  • Support software risk posture, IEC 62304 strategy, cybersecurity documentation, verification approach, design control expectations, and regulatory submission readiness.
  • Promote reuse by ensuring teams adopt platform modules, interface standards, reference architectures, test tools, and common design patterns unless a documented program-specific exception is justified.
  • Use field data, complaints, software defects, connectivity failure modes, service returns, usability feedback, cybersecurity findings, and manufacturing and service data to prioritize platform improvements.

  • Experience with embedded C and C++, real-time operating systems or embedded Linux, GUI and application frameworks, mobile or companion applications, Bluetooth Low Energy, Wi-Fi, Ethernet connectivity, cloud integration, application programming interfaces, telemetry, and service or diagnostic tools.
  • Experience with software test automation, static analysis, continuous integration and continuous delivery, simulators, hardware-in-the-loop and software-in-the-loop testing, and automated regression strategies.
  • Experience establishing platform governance, architecture review boards, reusable software modules, interface standards, and reference architectures across multiple product families.
  • Experience with hospital-connected systems, consumer-facing connected devices, capital equipment, or electromechanical medical platforms.

Wall Street analysts give Becton, Dickinson a 'moderate buy' rating despite 12% earnings decline forecast

Becton, Dickinson and Company shares have gained 19.6% over the past year, slightly trailing the S&P 500's 20.4% rise. However, in 2026 year-to-date, the stock has outperformed with a 20.2% gain versus the index's 13.7% advance. The medical technology company, valued at $50.5 billion by market cap, manufactures medical supplies, devices, laboratory equipment, and diagnostic products. It has outpaced the iShares U.S. Medical Devices ETF, which declined 9.5% over the past year. BDX's shares rose 3.8% on 6 August after reporting third-quarter results. Adjusted earnings per share of $3.23 exceeded analyst expectations of $3.14, whilst revenue of $5 billion surpassed the $4.9 billion forecast. Among 16 analysts covering the stock, the consensus rating is "Moderate Buy", comprising seven "Strong Buy" ratings and nine "Holds".

BD names Gary Sorsher chief quality officer as Jeff Silvestri retires after 25 years

BD has appointed Gary Sorsher as executive vice president and chief quality officer, effective 8 September. Sorsher brings over 30 years of experience in quality leadership at medical technology companies, most recently serving as chief quality officer at Edwards Lifesciences. The appointment follows the announcement that Jeffrey Silvestri, senior vice president and global head of quality, will retire in October after more than 25 years with BD. Silvestri joined the company in 1998 and has been instrumental in strengthening BD's quality foundation. Tom Polen, BD's chairman, CEO and president, emphasised that quality is central to earning trust with customers and patients. He expressed confidence in Sorsher's ability to advance quality excellence across the organisation.

BD fully enrolls trial of resorbable mesh for hernia prevention. BD called completing enrollment in the study "a significant milestone in its advanced tissue regeneration strategy and expansion efforts." Published Aug. 13, 2026 Dive brief: * BD said Wednesday it has completed enrollment in a clinical trial of resorbable mesh for preventing incisional hernias after open abdominal surgery. * Investigators enrolled 477 patients across 32 sites in the U.S. and Europe to compare the effect of BD's Phasix mesh and primary suture closure on the rate of incisional hernias. * BD will follow patients through the trial's primary endpoint at 24 months, beyond which it expects to use the data to seek Food and Drug Administration authorization for the indication. Dive insight: Incisional hernia is a serious and relatively common postoperative complication of elective abdominal surgeries where a large incision is made through the abdominal wall. BD's Phasix is a resorbable mesh. CR Bard, which BD bought for $24 billion in 2017, received FDA clearance in 2015 for Phasix in settings including hernia repair. Later, long-term data on the device confirmed the absence of mesh complications such as pain and infection. BD has faced lawsuits over adverse events allegedly linked to Bard meshes made from other materials. By completing enrollment in its PREVENT trial, BD took a step toward expanding the Phasix label to cover the prophylactic use of the device in patients undergoing elective open midline laparotomy surgery. Evaluating Phasix in hernia prevention builds on "decades of innovation in abdominal wall surgery" and will generate evidence that could "help broaden the role of regenerative technologies for patients at risk of post-surgical complications," Rian Seger, worldwide president of surgery at BD, said in a statement. BD called completion of enrollment in the clinical trial "a significant milestone in its advanced tissue regeneration strategy and expansion efforts." Last week, the company reported double-digit growth in sales of its infection prevention and advanced tissue regeneration products in the third quarter of its financial year. Discussing tissue regeneration on BD's third-quarter earnings call, CEO Thomas Polen said the company expects "strong growth going forward." Polen supported the expectations by highlighting clinical trials that the company is running to bring its biomaterial "into new indications to continue to expand our presence in those spaces."

However, the sharp drop in year-to-date net income and recent one-off loss raise questions about earnings quality. The company maintained its $4.20 annual dividend. Shares rose 6.8% following the results, though some analysts suggest the stock remains undervalued by approximately 25%.

BD reported third quarter fiscal 2026 revenue of $5.0 billion, up 5.4% as reported and 4.4% on a foreign exchange-neutral basis. GAAP diluted earnings per share from continuing operations reached $1.64, whilst adjusted diluted EPS came in at $3.23. Year-to-date cash from continuing operations increased 33.3% to $2.1 billion. Free cash flow rose 44.6% to $1.7 billion. The medical technology company updated its full-year guidance, expecting revenue growth towards the high end of its range whilst raising the midpoint of its adjusted diluted EPS guidance. The results represent BD's first full quarter following the 9 February 2026 spin-off of its Biosciences and Diagnostic Solutions business and its combination with Waters Corporation.
