Requirements
  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Certified Medical Assistant candidates must complete an approved medical assistant education or training pathway and meet the organization’s certification requirements.
  • Licensed Practical Nurse candidates must graduate from an approved practical nursing program.
  • The employee must qualify by maintaining a current Medical Assistant certification recognized by the organization or a current, unencumbered Georgia Licensed Practical Nurse license or multistate privilege valid for practice in Georgia.
  • Current Basic Life Support certification is required throughout employment.
  • The employee must perform only duties authorized by the credential held and maintain required competencies and credentials.
  • Strong interpersonal communication, attention to detail, multitasking ability, and verbal and written communication skills are required.
Responsibilities
  • Conduct comprehensive patient intake, obtain vital signs, record medical histories, and prepare patients for examinations.
  • Assist authorized providers with examinations, minor procedures, diagnostic testing, specimen collection, phlebotomy, point-of-care testing, dressing changes, suture removal, nebulizer treatments, and other approved clinical activities within the employee’s credentialed role.
  • Administer medications, immunizations, and treatments as authorized by the employee’s credential, competency, provider order, applicable law, supervision requirements, and organizational policy.
  • Educate patients and families about treatment plans, medication dosages, wound care, and home care requirements following provider guidance.
  • Maintain accurate, timely, and complete electronic health records and document care, communications, medication-related actions, and provider instructions.
  • Route clinical concerns appropriately; participate in telephone triage and nursing follow-up within the Licensed Practical Nurse scope, established protocols, and required supervision.
  • Coordinate internal and external appointments, manage prescription refill requests, and complete pre-certifications requiring insurance authorization.
  • Identify patient needs, provide culturally responsive and age-appropriate care, report concerns, and maintain professional boundaries.
  • Adhere to therapeutic standards, evaluate health outcomes against care goals, and comply with applicable regulations, practice standards, organizational policies, and Joint Commission standards.
  • Collaborate with physicians and the multidisciplinary team to resolve patient problems and meet care needs.
  • Maintain a safe, clean, and organized work environment and follow infection-control, medication administration and storage, and controlled-substance procedures.
  • Document patient care services and communicate actions, irregularities, and ongoing patient needs to support continuity among nursing teams.
  • Protect patient privacy and maintain confidentiality of patient information and operational matters.
  • Maintain professional relationships with patients, healthcare professionals, teams, and agencies.
  • Recognize credential and competency limits, seek guidance for unfamiliar or out-of-scope tasks, and perform other related assigned duties consistent with training, licensure or certification, supervision, and policy.
Desired Qualifications
  • Six months to one year of related outpatient, physician-practice, or ambulatory clinical experience is preferred; equivalent clinical training may be considered.

EHS makes Becker's Hospital Review's "100 Critical access hospitals to know" for 2026. (Excerpt from "100 Critical access hospitals to know- 2026" article in Becker's Hospital Review. Written by Anna Falvey.) Critical access hospitals occupy a singular place in the American healthcare system. With a maximum of 25 inpatient beds and a mandate to provide around-the-clock emergency care, these institutions do far more with far less than almost any other type of healthcare organization. The hospitals featured on this list are actively expanding access to specialty care, reducing the burden of patient travel, and driving meaningful improvements in the health of their communities. To help identify these institutions, the editorial team referenced rankings and recognitions from some of the most respected voices in rural health, including the National Rural Health Association and the Chartis Center for Rural Health... ... Effingham Health System (Springfield, Ga.). Effingham Health System is an independent 25-bed critical access hospital that annually treats more than 23,000 patients in its emergency department, as well as more than 25,000 patients across its primary and specialty care clinics. The hospital also performs more than 2,400 surgical procedures, operating with a staff of over 500 team members. The health system includes three rural health clinics, specialty clinics covering pediatrics, cardiology, occupational medicine and women's health, two primary care clinics and a 105-bed skilled nursing facility, which earned a 2025 CMS 5-star rating and was named to Newsweek's "America's Best Nursing Homes" list for 2026. Effingham Health System is the first critical access hospital in Georgia to implement a da Vinci robotic surgical system, having performed more than 1,500 robotic procedures since August 2018, and recently introduced the Oracle Health clinical AI agent, which has assisted providers in completing more than 5,000 patient notes since implementation in July 2025. The hospital's pediatric center, opened in 2023, has averaged more than 700 patients per month. Meanwhile, the school-based telemedicine program, launched in 2017, has expanded to all elementary, middle and high schools in Effingham County and has reduced student and teacher absenteeism.
