Its programs work by collecting taxes and fees, creating laws and regulations, and delivering services via state agencies, local governments, and partnerships with farmers, businesses, and non-profits. Nebraska differentiates itself from other states through its large agricultural sector and open land, which shape policies and programs around farming, water management, rural development, and access to markets. The goal is to sustain a stable, productive environment for residents and to support agricultural leadership and economic growth across the state.

TIF request for 8,000 square foot Nebraska DMV building in south Kearney approved. Brian Neben Oct 14, 2026 | 8:08 AM A rendering of the proposed Nebraska Department of Motor Vehicle facility to be located south of Kearney, (Slate Architecture, Courtesy) KEARNEY - The Kearney city council approved a request for tax increment financing for a project to construct an 8,000 square foot Nebraska Department of Motor Vehicle facility south of Interstate 80 during their meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 13. The request for tax increment financing (TIF) comes from Younes Development, doing business as Talmadge Jam III, LLC. The project seeks to construct a 8,532 square foot building on 3.5 acres located near the Frontage Road south of Number Juan BBQ, south of Interstate 80. The building will be used as a Nebraska Department of Motor Vehicle (DMV) facility. Construction is set to start in the fall of 2026 and the completion is anticipated in the fall of 2027. Prior to the meeting, Mayor Jonathan Nikkila said this would be a new DMV facility and would not replace the role served by the former DMV facility located near Talmadge St. and 4th Ave. on the south side of Kearney. City Manager Brenda Jensen said the Nebraska DMV is opening facilities like this across the state, with other builds planned in Grand Island, North Platte, Fremont, etc. She said the location in Kearney was chosen for its proximity to I-80, 2nd Ave., and hotels in the area. The TIF request will total $1,093,788, which breaks down to $326,217 for parking, $104,483 for electrical utilities, $100,000 for general utilities, $281,919 for site work, $50,000 for landscaping and $201,169 for other expenses. City staff recommended the council approve the TIF request for the project. The city council unanimously approved the TIF request. The project seeks to construct a 8,532 square foot building on 3.5 acres located near the Frontage Road south of Number Juan BBQ, south of Interstate 80, (Brian Neben, Central Nebraska Today)

On June 4, 2026, the Nebraska Attorney General's Office filed a Petition for Disciplinary Action in response to Dorsey Funeral Home and Cremations for cremating the remains of three decedents whose bodies were unclaimed in May 2025 as part of a training exercise. The establishment was not licensed at the time of the cremations. The Petition charged the facility with operating without a license and aiding and abetting the provision of false statements on death certificates of the three decedents. The Order entered by the Chief Medical Officer places the Dorsey establishment license on probation for a term of two years and requires the establishment to be supervised by a licensed funeral director and embalmer who is actively engaged in the practice in Nebraska and whose own license is in good standing.

Nebraska Ethanol Board expands.

Nebraska Ethanol Board expands. The Nebraska Ethanol Board (NEB) recently welcomed three Nebraska ethanol producers to the board as new voting members. Todd Good from Archer Daniels Midland (ADM), Joe Shanle from Trenton Agri Products (TAP), and Brent Hoops from Chief Ethanol were appointed by Nebraska Gov. Jim Pillen to fill the three newly-created ethanol producer seats on the NEB, effective immediately. The NEB's strategic plan legislation, Legislative Bill (LB) 815, passed earlier this year by the Nebraska Legislature with supermajority support and subsequently signed into law by Gov. Pillen, included provisions to add three ethanol producer seats to the NEB. The seats became open on Sept. 1 and were required to be filled with initial appointees within 30 days. Gov. Pillen also reappointed Jamie Bearup to the NEB labor position for a four-year term, and Scott McPheeters was reappointed for another term, now in the general farming position. McPheeters replaces Michael Thede, who retired from the NEB at the conclusion of his term on August 31. The NEB now has nine voting members, each representing a sector of the fuel value chain. Ethanol producers Good, Shanle and Hoops join Chairman Jan tenBensel (wheat), Vice Chairman Scott McPheeters (general farming), Secretary Randy Gard (petroleum marketers), Jamie Bearup (labor), Taylor Nelson (corn), and Tracy Zink (sorghum) as voting members. The Board is also supported by a technical advisor. University of Nebraska-Lincoln Chemical Engineering Professor Dr. Hunter Flodman holds that position.

LPD releases results of summer speeding enforcement campaign.

LPD releases results of summer speeding enforcement campaign. Lincoln Police have released the results of a three-month traffic enforcement campaign aimed at preventing speeding and reducing serious and fatal crashes. The enforcement project ran from June 1 through August 31, with officers working overtime to patrol high-traffic corridors and areas where serious collisions are more likely to occur. LPD Public Information Manager Erika Thomas says speed remains one of the primary contributing factors in fatal traffic crashes. During the campaign, officers made 826 traffic stops and issued 994 citations. Thomas says speeding accounted for 326 citations, while another 322 citations were issued for registration violations. Officers also issued 79 insurance citations, 72 seatbelt violations, 20 stop-sign violations and five traffic-signal citations. Three citations involved child seatbelt violations. The enforcement effort also resulted in eight criminal charges, 11 warrant arrests and 30 for driving under suspension. LPD says the high-visibility campaign was funded through its traffic-safety partnership with the Nebraska Department of Transportation Highway Safety Office.
