Kalshi bans former congressman George Santos for life after State of the Union trades.

Kalshi bans former congressman George Santos for life after State of the Union trades. Published August 31, 2026 at 3:21 PM CDT Kalshi has banned former Republican congressman George Santos for life after the prediction market company found he misled the public about whether he would attend President Trump's State of the Union address in order to make a profit on the platform. Kalshi, which has the power to impose financial penalties as part of its federal license, fined Santos $71,356. Santos responded on X: "Hey @Kalshi thanks for the lifetime ban from your gambling platform. Let's see how much longer you guys are around for." NPR first reported in June that federal authorities were investigating Santos for trades tied to a Kalshi market on who would be in attendance at the State of the Union. Days before the president's remarks, Santos posted a video on X saying, "I'm going to be there for the State of Union in the gallery, guys," only to later notify his followers that he was "watching SOTU from an airport tv." What he concealed from his social media audience was that he had already placed bets on Kalshi that he would not show up to the event. Kalshi said Santos made more than $17,000 in profit on the wagers. The Commodity Futures Trading Commission, which regulates prediction markets, ordered Santos to give back those profits as part of a settlement reached with the former congressman last month. The federal regulator also fined him $17,500. Santos, 38, who has a long history of fabricating details about his life and career, was expelled from Congress, where he represented New York, in 2023. A year later, he pleaded guilty to federal wire fraud and identity theft. His seven-year prison term was cut short last year after President Trump commuted his sentence. Santos, who did not return NPR's requests for comment, made violent threats against this reporter after NPR first reported on his State of the Union bets. Before his State of the Union activity was known, Santos was a paid promoter of Polymarket, Kalshi's main rival. The company cut ties with Santos after federal investigators launched the probe into his betting. Congressional and gubernatorial candidates also suspended from Kalshi after betting on their own races. Kalshi announced several other disciplinary actions on Monday against political candidates who bet on their own campaigns. Laurie Buckhout, a Republican Congressional candidate in North Carolina, was issued a fine and suspended from the site for three years after wagering on her own race. In a statement, Buckhout said: "I bet on myself. Literally. It was a dumb mistake, and as soon as I learned there was an issue, I worked to make it right. Safe to say my career as a Kalshi trader was short-lived." The company also suspended for three years and fined billionaire Stephen Cloobeck, the founder of the timeshare company Diamond Resorts, saying he bet $10,000 on his now-abandoned bid for governor of California. A representative for Cloobeck did not return a request for comment. And former Planet Fitness president Ben Midgley, who ran to be Maine's Republican candidate for governor this year but was defeated, was found by Kalshi to have also placed money on his own candidacy. He also received a three-year suspension and was hit with a financial penalty. Midgley also did not respond to a request for comment. Kalshi's spate of crackdowns comes after regulators in Washington announced a settlement with President Trump's former teleprompter operator, Gabriel Perez, for using advance notice of the president's speeches to profit on so-called "mention markets" on Kalshi. As part of the deal, Perez was forced to give back more than $100,000 he made by placing lucrative bets on Trump's famously unpredictable choice of words. Perez was fined an additional $65,000, a sum regulators said was arrived at after he fully cooperated with the investigation. Since the Trump administration has few guardrails on the booming prediction market industry, the platforms are largely tasked with policing themselves. Federal authorities have criminally charged some traders suspected of using insider information to profit on sites, but the cases have mostly started with referrals from Kalshi and its main competitor, Polymarket. The Commodity Futures Trading Commission has sued several states that have tried to treat prediction market sites as a form of gambling, a type of legal offensive the agency has never before embarked on. The debate about whether the prediction market industry should be regulated as gambling or a type of financial investment product is playing out in federal courts in a fight that pits the platforms and the Trump administration against state regulators. Last week, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit delivered Kalshi a blow by ruling that Nevada had a right to ban the site as an illegal gambling operation. The decision created a split with a ruling earlier this year from the 3rd Circuit Court of Appeals in a similar dispute that sided with Kalshi. The Supreme Court will likely have the final say over the legal status of prediction markets. Last month, 44 states signed a letter to the Trump administration arguing that prediction market operators prey on young people and those who have a propensity for gambling addiction. "These for-profit prediction markets are a new form of casino used primarily for a few to manipulate others - the type of harms squarely within States' historic police powers to regulate gambling," the letter stated.

Fitness is splitting into winners and losers - which side are you on?

Fitness is splitting into winners and losers - which side are you on? From Planet Fitness lawsuits to Basic-Fit's profit comeback, the industry is rewarding operators who get community and hybrid right - here's what to do now. Sqwod · 28 Aug 2026 The market is handing out report cards. The fitness industry is sorting itself out in real time, and the grades are brutal. Planet Fitness is facing a class action lawsuit with a deadline flagged by Kaplan Fox, per The Globe and Mail - a reminder that investor confidence in big-box budget fitness is shakier than the marketing suggests. Meanwhile, Basic-Fit is building momentum with a return to profit in 2026, according to Ad-hoc-news.de. Same sector. Opposite trajectories. The difference isn't luck. The operators winning right now share two things: they've figured out community, and they've stopped treating hybrid training as a gimmick. Community isn't a vibe - It's a business model. Phillip Mills, speaking to Athletech News, made the case plainly: community is where the real power of fitness lives. Not the equipment, not the app, not the pricing tier. The feeling of belonging that makes a member renew instead of cancel. This matters more now because the competitive pressure on operators is intensifying from multiple directions. In Germany, the DSSV is pushing back against a proposed sugar drink tax that would squeeze margins at facilities where beverages are part of the revenue mix - another external cost pressure operators didn't ask for. When your margin is under attack from policy and pricing wars simultaneously, retention becomes your only real lever. And retention runs on community. The operators who treat group fitness and social programming as a cost center are reading the wrong spreadsheet. Hybrid is no longer optional infrastructure. Perform Better's approach, covered by body LIFE, puts it directly: hybrid training environments aren't a future trend - they're the product now. Operators who build spaces that work for in-person and digital-connected training are creating stickiness that a price cut can't replicate. This isn't about bolting an app onto your existing floor plan. It's about designing the experience so that a member's digital touchpoints and their physical visits reinforce each other. The DSSV is also running exclusive online seminars for its members - a small signal, but a consistent one: the professional layer of fitness is going hybrid too, not just the consumer layer. Basic-Fit's profit recovery didn't happen by accident. Operators who invest in the right infrastructure during difficult cycles tend to emerge with stronger unit economics than competitors who cut their way through. Do this now. * Community audit. Can you name the social moments in your programming that members would actually miss? If you can't, your members can't either. * Hybrid gap check. Walk your floor and ask: does this space work for someone who also trains with SqwodTM Hero Dna, LLC digitally? If the answer is no, that's a retention hole. * Margin stress test. With external cost pressures like the sugar tax debate the DSSV is tracking, what's your revenue mix resilience? If one policy change breaks your model, the model needs work. The fitness market is not collapsing - it's concentrating. Capital and members are moving toward operators who offer real belonging and real flexibility. The window to position yourself on the right side of that split is open, but it won't stay open indefinitely. Figures from public sources, as of 2026-08-28. Estimates vary between firms; SqwodTM Hero Dna, LLC link them so you can verify.

We'd test all the perfume.

1470kyyw'd test all the perfume. It was only here for 13 years, but remember when Randall's was open in Lufkin? I recently posted a story about Planet Fitness in Lufkin relocating from North Timberland Drive to the old Conn's location in the Angelina Village Shopping Center. Do you remember what was in that location before Conn's? In 1992, Randall's grocery store had their grand opening in Lufkin. The history of Randall's grocery store in Lufkin. Randall's opened in the Angelina Village Shopping Center in 1992 and remained open until shutting down in 2005. For 13 years, this 29,000+ square-foot grocery store was one of the most modern in the Deep East Texas area. I was a big fan of their extensive produce and meat departments. I liked the big-city shopping experience they brought to a smaller market like Lufkin. Randall's was a part of the Tom Thumb grocery chain, and by 2005, many of their stores were struggling to make a profit. As a result, many of their shopping centers were closed for good in the Houston and Dallas markets. Lufkin was also part of the closures affecting the Houston area. While serving Deep East Texas, Randall's ran an aggressive advertising campaign. This included testimonials from area shoppers. See if you recognize any of the folks in the two commercials in the video below. Other Angelina Village stores you may remember. Stores such as Atwoods, Harbor Freight, Ashley Furniture, and Beall's are now mainstays of this shopping center. If you've lived in the Lufkin area for a couple of decades or more, you may remember previous tenants such as the Angelina Twin Cinema, Clarks, and Kmart. There was even a large Blockbuster Video store just off the Loop 287 frontage. Ah yes, VHS rentals...those were the days. What it was like to hang out at the mall in the '90s. Before smartphones and Amazon, there was one place to be on a Saturday afternoon in the '90s-the mall. This was life at the mall for millennials. Gallery Credit: Danielle Kootman 1470kyyw'd meet up with friends. Before texting, 1470kyyw'd just meet its friends in front of the escalators and off 1470kyyw'd go to roam around parent-free. 1470kyyw'd get its ears pierced. Remember going to Clarie's to check out the latest butterfly clips and mood rings? 1470kyyw would maybe even get its ears pierced. 1470kyyw'd carry bags to look cool. The more bags the better to really look the part of a shopaholic. 1470kyyw'd Look for Weird Stuff at Spencer's. 1470kyyw'd giggle its way through the scandalous aisles, and maybe grab a lava lamp. Auntie anne's aroma surrounded 1470kyyw. The sweet and salty smell of pretzels filled the air. One whiff and you had to have one. Pretzel bites with cheese were the best! Canva, butique15 via eBay Victoria Secret's Love Spell was the scent of the decade. 1470kyyw'd flip through cds. Britney, Backstreet Boys, a one hit wonder band with a random name...Sam Goody had it all. Get a slice of Sbarro. 1470kyyw'd use some of its cash to grab a slice from Sbarro. Have photo ops with friends. Whether 1470kyyw crammed in the photo booth or got some glamour shots, the mall was a great place to get some pics with friends to hand in its lockers. '90s Toys that spark instant childhood memories. This '90s nostalgia is sure to make you feel like a kid again. Gallery Credit: Danielle Kootman They were all the rage then, and they're still popular today. Having one of these was definitely a status symbol. It was pretty cool to have a doll that looks just like you. 1470kyyw would feed her actual food and change her dirty diapers. Somehow this was fun. Life size Barbie! The best part is that you could share clothes. "I Love You, You Love Me." Whether it was a stuffed toy or that creepy Jack-in-the-Box, you probably had Barney something. Larry D. Moore, Wikimedia Commons/CC BY 4.0 (background removed, outlined) "Bop it, pull it, twist it." That was probably stuck in your head most days. Where anxiety began. 1470kyyw can feel this picture. Mercari.com Beanie Babies. Before Squishmallows, there were Beanie Babies. Probably the most sought after collectable in the '90s (and no, they weren't filled with spider eggs...look it up). If you grew up to be a dentist, this may have been where it all started. Although, now those bites probably hurt a little more. It was the hottest mystery game where you gathered with all of your girlfriends and discovered which cute boy had a crush on you. 1470kyyw really just liked using that pink phone though. Where 1470kyyw let its inner artist out. Essentially a hot light bulb that cooked small batches of batter. Yum? They may seem creepy now, but looking back these little furry creatures were its beloved pets. After watching Double Dare 1470kyyw were all obsessed with the sticky green substance. It kept 1470kyyw on edge as 1470kyyw imagined trying to sneak past obstacles for a midnight snack all before the alarm went off. Kind of like 1470kyyw did in real life. It was all the fun of Nintendo in the palm of your hand. It also came with the crazy new game (at the time)...Tetris. They were way needier than Tamagotchis. Short clips of songs on keychain-sized cartridges, does it get better than that? The more you had dangling from your backpack or belt loop, the cooler you were. They lit up its rooms at night. The coolest rooms had these. This game really brought out its competitive side. It also consisted of 1470kyyw hammering down that little lever as fast as 1470kyyw could, regardless of if a ball was near. It was soooo satisfying when you got one. They filled toy boxes and showed up in random places throughout the house. The commercials were magical, the real light was somewhat disappointing. But, 1470kyyw still had fun with it. Its guide for the real thing. Another one you probably forgot all about until you saw that board with the escalator in the middle. This was back when malls were all that and a bag of chips. The hair stamps, though! They need a millennial Toys "R" Us for those of 1470kyyw whose parents couldn't afford these back in the day. If you weren't a fan of these you can talk to the hand because how else would you know what mood you're in? 1470kyyw barely knew how to play it, but 1470kyyw sure did like setting it up. From Duck Hunt to Super Mario-Classic. Cowabunga! They were popular then, and they still are today. 1470kyyw put its hands and face in it, and never cleaned it. They may not have meant to be a toy, but that didn't stop 1470kyyw from playing with and collecting them. Let's ignore the fact that the game consisted of 1470kyyw pulling ribs out of a guy, that buzz was terrifying. Hours of Crash Bandicoot played on this. Remember the days when all it took to entertain 1470kyyw was knocking down a stack of these? "Gotta Catch em All"... (and 1470kyyw tried). The travel-sized doll house. You probably forgot all about this one. They were its high-tech best friends. Also, if you had two they would bark at each other. Classic TV Commercials, YouTube 1470kyyw either had the kit or had the commercial seared into its brain. The theme song really hyped 1470kyyw up, and 1470kyyw picked its favorite ranger based on the color of their suit. You can hear it now..."SeGaaa". These adorable little helicopters were out for blood. While awesome, it wasn't pleasant if it smacked you in the face. The best way to work out issues with your siblings. Made 1470kyyw feel like a legit artist. These for sure when on the refrigerator. 1470kyyw got these just to put them down the stairs. 1470kyyw would literally just slap them on and off its wrists all day. Had to be pleasant for parents. This guy went through some hard times. 1470kyyw would stretch and twist him as much as 1470kyyw could. He never broke though. Mario on this was next level. Countless hours spent riding Yoshi around. A tiny toy that had such a big impact. It gave 1470kyyw lessons about responsibility as 1470kyyw had to care for it like 1470kyyw would a baby. Simple, yet satisfying. 1470kyyw put them together, then barely played with them. Oriental Trading Funny then, funny today. Who can resist a classic fart joke? Yo, I know you remember these. They were the OG fidget spinners. So many hours spent mastering tricks so you could rule the playground.
