Responsibilities
  • Deliver medical care to a wide variety of patients and examine and treat patients independently and in autonomous collaboration with other healthcare professionals.
  • Ensure appropriate illness and injury care, disease prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and recovery; prescribe medications and order diagnostic tests as appropriate.
  • Perform and document complete physical examinations and comprehensive health histories.
  • Perform age-appropriate patient histories and physical examinations independently.
  • Order and interpret diagnostic and therapeutic tests according to patient age-specific needs.
  • Prescribe appropriate pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic treatment modalities.
  • Implement interventions to help patients regain or maintain physiologic stability and monitor intervention effectiveness.
  • Provide care in accordance with facility, state, and federal regulations.
  • Facilitate patient transitions within and between healthcare settings, including admitting, transferring, and discharging patients.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary team members by making appropriate referrals.
  • Facilitate staff, patient, and family decision-making by providing educational tools.
  • Adhere to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguard University assets.
  • Elicit and record chief complaints, interval histories, and patient and family medical histories for glaucoma patients.
  • Measure visual acuity at distance and near.
  • Perform lensometry using a lensometer or auto lensometer.
  • Perform retinoscopy and refraction using a phoropter, autorefractor, and trial frame at distance and near.
  • Perform confrontation visual field and Amsler grid testing and evaluate pupils.
  • Measure central corneal thickness using a portable handheld pachymeter.
  • Assess intraocular pressure using Goldmann applanation tonometry, handheld electronic tonometry, and rebound tonometry.
  • Administer confrontation, Humphrey, and portable head-mounted visual field examinations.
  • Assist physicians with patient care during office-based laser and minor slit-lamp procedures, including capsulotomy, trabeculoplasty, iridotomy, suture removal, and bleb needling.
  • Administer ocular imaging, including optical coherence tomography and slit-lamp, fundus, and external photography.
  • Interpret glaucoma testing, including visual fields, optical coherence tomography, and photographs.
  • Insert and remove hard, soft, and corneal bandage contact lenses.
  • Administer diagnostic pharmaceutical agents.
  • Perform binocular indirect ophthalmoscopy.
  • Observe refractive abnormalities and ocular disease.
  • Prescribe eyeglasses, contact lenses, and low-vision aids.
  • Examine patients of all ages, including children and elderly patients.
Desired Qualifications
  • Previous experience in an eye care setting is preferred.
  • Certification by the American Nurses Credentialing Center for Nurse Practitioners is preferred.
