  • A bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field with 8+ years of relevant experience, or a master's degree with 6+ years; equivalent hands-on experience may substitute for the degree.
  • Experience designing and building hardware-in-the-loop or system-level test benches from initial architecture through commissioning, including bench topology, schematic capture, component selection, harness design, and bring-up.
  • Hands-on experience with vehicle networks including CAN, CAN FD, LIN, and Automotive Ethernet, including restbus simulation, network database authoring using DBC and LDF, and bus analysis tooling.
  • Experience developing real-time plant, actuator, sensor, and power models and deploying them to real-time target hardware, whether model-based or hand-written.
  • Proficiency in Python and a systems language such as C, C++, or equivalent, with experience building test automation frameworks and integrating them into continuous integration pipelines.
  • Working experience with a robotics middleware and its logging and replay tooling, such as ROS node development, rosbag, and visualization, or an equivalent.
  • Working knowledge of sensor and compute interfaces, including camera serialization using GMSL and FPD-Link, lidar and radar interfaces, and precision time synchronization using PTP/gPTP.
  • Experience with fault injection and off-nominal testing, including forced faults, dropped frames, degraded sensor conditions, and loss-of-communication scenarios.
  • Solid understanding of autonomous driving systems, including sensors, perception, sensor fusion, planning, controls, and vehicle dynamics.
  • Experience delivering first-of-kind work in environments where requirements, vehicle platforms, and software are concurrently in development.
  • Strong written documentation practice covering bench topology, test procedures, and failure analysis, sufficient for engineers who did not build the bench.
Responsibilities
  • Own the design and construction of system benches, including bench topology, electrical architecture, schematic capture, component selection and sourcing, harness design and fabrication, physical build, and commissioning.
  • Establish and document the correlation between bench behavior and vehicle behavior, including where the bench diverges and what that means for test validity.
  • Simulate vehicle systems that are not physically present on the bench, including network traffic from absent controllers, power and ignition states, drive-by-wire actuation, and body and charging behavior across CAN, CAN FD, and Automotive Ethernet.
  • Implement gateway and signal-override paths that allow an engineer to command any vehicle state, including states the base vehicle cannot readily produce.
  • Implement replay of recorded sensor and vehicle data into the autonomy compute, time-synchronized to original timestamps and at full rate, and own the interfaces, data flows, and synchronization across subsystems.
  • Begin with open-loop replay and architect for closed-loop replay as a follow-on capability.
  • Design and maintain automated test frameworks that allow bench execution to be triggered by a code change, gate software releases, run unattended, and report results in a form that engineers outside the hardware team can interpret without assistance.
  • Define and execute validation covering fault injection, degraded-mode and fail-operational behavior, redundant compute and power paths, and loss-of-communication conditions in support of L4 requirements and the evidence a system safety case requires.
  • Own build-versus-buy decisions for bench hardware and software and be accountable for their cost, lead time, and long-term maintenance burden.
  • Manage suppliers and vendor toolchains where commercial platforms are selected.
  • Support the autonomy, embedded, hardware, and vehicle integration teams as the primary users of the bench, including access, uptime, and monitoring.
  • Lead root-cause analysis of system-level failures across sensor timing, drivers, harnessing, and compute, and convert findings into design changes and documented corrective actions upstream.
  • Establish automotive-grade conventions for bench schematics, circuit naming, labeling, harness documentation, and configuration control, and hold internal teams and suppliers to them.
  • Lead design reviews and bring engineers and technicians up to speed on the bench and how to troubleshoot it.

Travis Kalanick says he wouldn't do 'anything different' about the missed Uber-Lyft acquisition. Aug 16, 2026, 10:21 PM PT Uber and Lyft were just not meant to be, says Travis Kalanick. In an Andreessen Horowitz interview released on Friday, the former Uber CEO said he has no regrets about how he handled a potential acquisition of Lyft. "I wouldn't do anything different. And it's easy to say now, but I got a lot of shit for that for a long time," he said. "I would sit across the table from the guys, and it was just clear that we were very culturally different." Uber held acquisition talks to buy its rival Lyft in 2014. The negotiations fell apart because Kalanick refused to pay more than $2 billion, while Lyft was seeking a higher valuation. In Friday's interview, Kalanick said that cultural mismatch was a problem too, and it started with Lyft's pink mustache effort. In 2012, Lyft introduced a giant plush pink mustache on its car grilles to make its vehicles instantly recognizable and reinforce a playful brand that contrasted with taxis and Uber. The quirky "carstache" fit Lyft's image of ride-hailing as a social experience, but it became less suitable as the company sought business customers. Lyft began moving away from the oversize mustache around 2014, replacing it with subtler, more practical ways to identify the correct car. The former Uber CEO, who recently launched robotics company Atoms, said that he had wanted the Lyft acquisition to go through. "When you meet with somebody, and you're going to acquire them, there's so much goodness that could come from it," he said. He added that he wanted it to work because Uber was spending an "insane amount of money" trying to compete with Lyft for market share and price. Kalanick resigned as Uber CEO in June 2017 following months of turmoil at the company, after which major investors demanded his removal. Dara Khosrowshahi was appointed CEO later that year, with a mandate to remake Uber's culture and prepare the company for an eventual public listing. Still, on Friday, Kalanick said: "I'd stand by every decision I made at Uber." In March, Kalanick rebranded an earlier venture as Atoms, an industrial AI company automating food, mining, and transportation with robotics. Atoms announced a $1.7 billion equity funding round in July 2026, led by A16z, with participation from Bain Capital and Fifth Wall. A16z's Ben Horowitz joined Atoms' board as part of the deal.

August 6, 2026 Gautam Gupta, the former finance chief under Kalanick, said in social media posts on Wednesday that he has joined Atoms as chief financial officer. Gupta spent more than four years at Uber until he left in July 2017, just a few weeks after Kalanick resigned as CEO. (Gupta had announced his intention to leave that May.) Hiring Gupta continues a trend of Kalanick getting the Uber band back together at Atoms. Earlier this year, Atoms acquired mining autonomy startup Pronto, which is run by former Uber (and former Google) self-driving engineer Anthony Levandowski. According to LinkedIn, a number of former top Uber employees who worked with Kalanick also work at Atoms, which was previously called CloudKitchens. 'On many levels, this round is a bit of unfinished business. Travis Kalanick's robotics and industrial AI startup Atoms has appointed Gautam Gupta as chief financial officer. Gupta previously served as finance chief at Uber under Kalanick, leaving in July 2017 shortly after Kalanick resigned as CEO. The appointment continues a pattern of Kalanick reuniting with former Uber colleagues at Atoms. Earlier this year, the company acquired mining autonomy startup Pronto, led by former Uber self-driving engineer Anthony Levandowski. Several other former top Uber employees now work at Atoms, previously known as CloudKitchens. The hire comes weeks after Atoms raised $1.7 billion, with Uber participating as an investor. Gupta is stepping down from A*, the VC firm he co-founded in 2020, where his fund made its largest-ever investment in Atoms.
