Requirements
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Graduation from an approved Medical Assistant educational program recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.
  • A valid approved Medical Assistant certification: Certified Medical Assistant from the American Association of Medical Assistants, Registered Medical Assistant from American Medical Technologists, Certified Clinical Medical Assistant from the National Healthcare Association, National Certified Medical Assistant from the National Healthcareer Association or National Center for Competency Testing, or Nationally Registered Certified Medical Assistant from the National Association for Health Professionals.
  • American Heart Association Basic Life Support certification for healthcare providers.
  • Florida HIV/AIDS Healthcare Professional Continuing Education certification.
  • At least 2 years of previous experience.
  • Knowledge of basic medical terminology.
  • Knowledge of medical and surgical asepsis.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with patients, families, and the clinical team.
  • Ability to adapt and remain flexible in new, different, or changing environments.
  • Strong time-management skills to prioritize tasks and act proactively.
  • Ability to uphold professional ethics and maintain patient confidentiality.
Responsibilities
  • Uphold standards for ethical behavior, therapeutic communication, and protection of patient information.
  • Assist providers with physical examinations by preparing treatment and examination rooms with the required supplies, instruments, and materials.
  • Prepare patients for physician care by providing basic instructions and information about examination procedures.
  • Perform routine laboratory tests.
  • Measure vital signs, perform electrocardiograms and phlebotomy, and document findings in the patient’s medical record.
  • Observe and report changes in patients’ signs or symptoms.
  • Administer medication safely as directed by the physician, except that Medical Assistants 2 working in hospital-based units do not perform medication administration.
  • Assist with patient-care activities such as walking.
  • Escort and transport patients to various hospital locations.
  • Clean and sterilize medical instruments while observing sterile technique.
  • Schedule patients for tests and complete required laboratory-work forms.
  • Provide patients with the provider’s care instructions and information.
  • Maintain accurate and complete patient records and documentation.
  • Order, stock, and inventory supplies and assist with clerical duties.
  • Adhere to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguard University assets.
