About the job

Requirements
  • A bachelor's degree or equivalent experience; typically 12+ years of software engineering experience, including 6+ years focused on AI/ML, LLM, or NLP systems in production and 3+ years operating as a senior individual-contributor technical leader. Fewer years are required with a relevant master's or doctorate.
  • Demonstrated technical leadership above a Lead AI Engineer, including setting technical direction and standards across multiple teams rather than owning architecture for only one team or platform area.
  • A proven track record setting technical strategy adopted by multiple teams.
  • Deep, hands-on expertise building production LLM applications at scale, including prompt engineering, retrieval-augmented generation, agentic workflows, tool use, and evaluation harnesses, and judgment about which patterns will remain durable.
  • Experience with commercial large language model APIs such as Anthropic and OpenAI, and tool-integration protocols such as Model Context Protocol, including evaluating emerging alternatives.
  • Strong software engineering fundamentals, including Python and/or Java, REST APIs, event-driven architecture, microservices, and cloud-native design; Azure is preferred, while AWS or GCP is acceptable.
  • Experience with vector and graph retrieval systems, embeddings, and knowledge-base architectures at production scale across multiple products.
  • Deep working knowledge of LLMOps/MLOps, including usage attribution, cost and spend monitoring, abuse detection, and model evaluation pipelines, including designing these systems from scratch.
  • Ability to influence and align senior engineering and executive stakeholders without direct authority.
  • Deep familiarity with regulated or healthcare data environments and AI governance frameworks, including model risk review, connector approval tiers, and PHI handling.
  • Awareness of the fast-moving generative AI and agentic landscape, with an ability to distinguish durable technical bets from hype.
  • Experience managing strategic relationships with AI infrastructure vendors and model providers at the enterprise level.
  • Strong written and verbal communication for executive, board-level, and external technical audiences.
Responsibilities
  • Own the multi-year technical strategy and roadmap for the AI platform across all teams building on it, including model strategy, retrieval-augmented generation and retrieval architecture, connector ecosystems, and evaluation frameworks.
  • Serve as the final technical escalation point for the hardest and most ambiguous architecture and reliability problems across the AI platform, multiple teams, and systems.
  • Set architecture, security, and evaluation standards adopted by multiple Lead AI Engineers and their teams; audit and evolve those standards as the platform and threat landscape change.
  • Advise VP- and executive-level leadership as a primary technical voice on AI platform strategy, model risk, and investment trade-offs.
  • Personally lead architecture and prototyping for the organization's highest-ambiguity, highest-risk AI initiatives that existing teams or patterns do not solve.
  • Develop Lead and Senior AI Engineers into stronger technical leaders through design review, technical coaching, and structured knowledge-sharing across teams.
  • Shape enterprise-wide AI governance policy, including model risk review, connector and tool approval frameworks, and PHI-handling standards, in partnership with Legal, Compliance, and Privacy leadership.
  • Own evaluation and long-term strategy for foundation model providers and AI infrastructure vendors across the company.
  • Represent the company's AI engineering capability externally through industry forums, partner and vendor technical relationships, and recruiting for senior technical talent.
  • Influence AI platform direction and investment across the broader enterprise, beyond a single business unit.
Desired Qualifications
  • An advanced degree (M.S. or Ph.D.) in Computer Science, AI/ML, or a related technical field.
  • Prior experience as a Principal, Staff, or Distinguished Engineer setting AI/ML technical strategy across multiple teams within healthcare IT or another highly regulated industry.
  • A track record of publications, patents, open-source contributions, or industry speaking on applied AI/LLM systems.
  • Experience shaping enterprise-wide AI governance policy in partnership with Legal, Compliance, and Privacy leadership.

About the company

CoverMyMeds is a healthcare technology platform that simplifies how patients get prescribed medications by focusing on the prior authorization process. The platform connects healthcare providers, pharmacies, pharmacy benefit managers, and health plans to automate and streamline the approval workflow, reducing manual steps and helping patients receive their medicines more quickly. What we learned at HIMSS 2026: the future of specialty care.

What CoverMyMeds LLC. learned at HIMSS 2026: the future of specialty care. HIMSS always provides a snapshot of where healthcare is heading - not in five years, but right now. HIMSS 2026 made one thing impossible to ignore: the industry is in the middle of a pivotal transition, driven by AI, automation and the accelerating complexity of specialty care. Across keynotes, exhibit hall conversations and hands-on demos, the message from health systems, technology leaders and innovators was consistent: specialty care teams need simpler, more connected ways to move patients from prescribing to therapy initiation and their expectations are changing fast. As someone who spends every day working with provider organizations, health systems and EHR partners, this year's conference felt like a clear turning point. Connectivity, interoperability and intelligent automation are now baseline expectations. CoverMyMeds came to HIMSS ready for that shift, and what CoverMyMeds LLC. heard this year reinforced just how essential that work is. Mar 15, 2026 10 min

CoverMyMeds launches integrated platform to streamline specialty therapy access and cut provider admin burden

CoverMyMeds has launched expanded Specialty Access and Affordability Solutions to accelerate patient access to specialty therapies. The new platform integrates benefits investigation, medical and pharmacy prior authorisation, and patient services enrollment into a single workflow. The solution addresses inefficiencies in specialty care, where teams currently use up to nine different applications to help patients access medications. Sixty-three per cent of clinicians identify these responsibilities as the most time-consuming, particularly for complex specialty treatments. The platform automates prior authorisation workflows across medical and pharmacy benefits, using clinical data from electronic health records to complete forms and submit documentation to insurers. It maintains visibility for providers and can integrate with hubs and specialty pharmacies. CoverMyMeds, part of McKesson Corporation, connects over 350 electronic health record systems, 50,000 pharmacies and one million providers.

Ncpdp Foundation Names Covermymeds As Fourth Founder'S Gift Donor

Gift will support research projects for the Coordination of Care and Innovation strategic initiativeSCOTTSDALE, Ariz., June 5, 2024 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- The NCPDP Foundation announced today a new partnership with CoverMyMeds to support the Foundation's recently established fourth strategic initiative, which focuses on empowering Coordination of Care and Innovation."The NCPDP Foundation Board felt very strongly that our fourth strategic initiative should reflect the healthcare industry's shift to a team-based care model," said J.W. Hill, MBAHCM, CNED, Executive Director of the NCPDP Foundation. "From pharmacies and physicians to benefits managers and standards-makers like NCPDP, the need is recognized."A more interoperable approach to patient care—the heart of our Coordination of Care and Innovation initiative—is exactly the type of change needed to achieve the Foundation's vision of a healthcare ecosystem that continuously innovates and fully incorporates health information technology as a tool to deliver better outcomes for the common good of all," Hill concluded. While much progress has been made to streamline electronic documentation and information exchange in the last decade, there are still many underexplored opportunities to prove how pharmacists contribute to a patient-centered care model. Innovations that are on the horizon in digital therapeutics and pharmacogenomics will put even more emphasis on everything pharmacists do for patients outside of dispensing. The Founder's Gift for the Coordination of Care and Innovation initiative will support projects that show how pharmacists can close gaps in care."As a leader in breaking down barriers to medication access and affordability, CoverMyMeds understands the importance of collaboration and interoperability in delivering better patient outcomes," said Kristina Crockett, Vice President, Product, CoverMyMeds. "Our investment in research efforts that align with the NCPDP Foundation's Coordination of Care and Innovation initiative reflects our ongoing commitment to helping people get the medicine they need to live healthier lives
