Requirements
  • A minimum of 2 years of commercial lines underwriting experience in package lines and/or workers’ compensation in the property and casualty insurance market is strongly preferred.
  • A bachelor’s degree is preferred; demonstrated significant underwriting experience may substitute.
  • Insurance designations or insurance education coursework, such as Associate in General Insurance, is strongly preferred.
  • Knowledge of underwriting laws and rules and their application is required.
  • Knowledge of policy and procedures regarding risk administration, risk management, underwriting, and loss control is required.
  • Knowledge of the insurance industry and its business environment is required.
  • A thorough understanding of business exposure calculations, classifications, experience rating, or other plan modifications is required.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel is required.
  • The ability to assess situations, select applicable rules, and make appropriate and sustainable decisions is required.
  • The ability to identify complex problems, evaluate options, and implement solutions is required.
  • The ability to make sound decisions after considering facts, potential risks, customer needs, and alternatives is required.
  • The ability to develop and implement account, territorial, producer, and book strategies to acquire and retain business is required.
  • The ability to present ideas and information clearly to individuals and groups and address concerns or needs is required.

Responsibilities
  • Determine the acceptability, quality, pricing, profitability, and opportunity for new and existing business.
  • Complete thorough risk analysis on designated accounts using Encova, National Council on Compensation Insurance, Insurance Services Office, industry rules, policies, procedures, and guidelines.
  • Identify, create, and initiate new business opportunities within the current book of business and assigned agencies.
  • Gather and analyze information necessary to accurately evaluate risk.
  • Accept or reject commercial lines accounts outside straight-through processing rules by identifying exposures and analyzing risk.
  • Apply discretionary pricing based on risk exposures, risk quality, loss potential, pricing model indications, and the letter of authority.
  • Determine the acceptability of revision requests outside straight-through processing rules and communicate the handling decision to the Associate Underwriter.
  • Communicate underwriting decisions and changes involving coverage, limits, exposures, or pricing, and discuss alternatives with assigned agents.
  • Promote effective agency relationships and encourage continued use of company products and technology.
  • Support appointed agents by serving as a resource for underwriting questions.
  • Use Encova systems to transact requests and endorsements.
  • Use underwriting guidelines, business-unit strategies, and consultations with others to understand risk exposures.
  • Prepare proposals for producers, including negotiation of terms and conditions.
  • Ensure proper issuance of policies, certificates, filings, and notifications.
  • Seek management guidance on risks exceeding assigned authority levels.
  • Use industry rules and guidance to ensure proper policy construction.
  • Identify underwriting issues, recommend and develop problem-resolution plans, and implement them where appropriate.
  • Manage existing and prospective accounts through account renewals, new-business presentations, and discussions with agents.
  • Monitor and analyze growth and profitability of assigned agents and initiate appropriate actions.
  • Mentor entry-level underwriters and trainees to support profitable retention, growth, and customer-service standards.
  • Serve as a resource for other team members and business units.
  • Travel to various locations when necessary to support business objectives.

Encova Insurance Appoints Ramu Lingala As Chief Information Officer

Encova Insurance has named Ramu Lingala as its new Executive Vice President and Chief Information Officer, succeeding longtime CIO Tony Laska, who will retire at the end of this year.Lingala officially assumed the role on May 1 after joining the company in February to become familiar with its operations and culture.Laska, who has held key leadership roles at BrickStreet, Motorists, and Encova, will remain with the company in an advisory capacity through the end of 2025.“I want to congratulate Tony on a successful career and thank him for his unmatched contributions to BrickStreet, Motorists and now Encova,” said Encova President and CEO TJ Obrokta Jr. “I still remember recruiting him many years ago and the remarkable impact he had during the early years of BrickStreet.
