Small-cap picks: Tutor Perini and Gulfport Energy shine, while Ryder ($9.21B) raises doubts

StockStory has picked two small-cap stocks to watch and one to avoid, saying small caps are often overlooked by Wall Street but carry high risk because reliable analyst price targets are scarce. It advises caution on Ryder (NYSE:R), which has a $9.21 billion market cap. Sales grew 2.4% annually over two years, gross margin is 19.7%, and the company tends to burn cash. Shares trade at $238.10, or 14.8x forward P/E. Tutor Perini (NYSE:TPC, $4.13 billion market cap) is a pick. Revenue grew 18.2% annually over two years, and its free cash flow margin rose 7.6 percentage points in five years. Shares trade at $78.67, or 15.1x forward P/E. Gulfport Energy (NYSE:GPOR, $2.90 billion market cap) also makes the list. Revenue grew 10.8% annually over ten years, with a 70.9% gross margin and 17% free cash flow margin. Shares trade at $163.71, or 7x forward P/E.

Former Expand Energy CEO Domenic Dell'Osso named Gulfport Energy chief executive

Gulfport Energy has appointed Domenic Dell'Osso as chief executive, effective 28 May. Dell'Osso left his CEO role at larger rival Expand Energy three months ago after leading the company and its predecessor Chesapeake Energy, which he joined in 2008. Dell'Osso spent over a decade as Chesapeake's chief financial officer before becoming CEO. He oversaw the 2024 merger between Chesapeake and Southwestern Energy that created Expand Energy. Gulfport has operated without a permanent CEO since John Reinhart's departure was announced on 9 March after three years. Chairman Timothy Cutt praised Dell'Osso as a "proven leader with the strategic vision, financial discipline and operational expertise" needed for the role. Gulfport operates in Appalachian shale basins and Oklahoma's Midcontinent formation.
