About the job

Requirements
  • At least 5 years of experience building and operating production software across web or mobile frontends and backend services, with sufficient hands-on depth to review designs, unblock engineers, and make architectural decisions.
  • At least 1 year of experience managing an engineering team of 3–6 people, including coaching engineers, managing performance, hiring, and building an inclusive, high-trust team culture.
  • A track record of owning critical customer-facing or business-critical systems, setting and maintaining quality and reliability standards, and leading teams through incidents.
  • Experience owning third-party vendor relationships, holding partners accountable to outcomes, and making build-versus-buy decisions.
  • Ability to structure ambiguous business objectives into actionable plans.
  • Ability to shape roadmaps and improve team processes while also addressing implementation or production issues hands-on.
  • Ability to explain technical trade-offs to non-technical stakeholders, write clear documentation, and build strong relationships with Product, Design, Risk, and peer engineering teams.
Responsibilities
  • Build and lead a high-performing platform team of full-stack engineers, including employees and partner contractors; set clear expectations, create career growth paths, and maintain a culture of ownership and continuous improvement.
  • Own the mobile and web platform, including mobile app build pipelines, release trains, app store submissions, phased rollouts, feature flagging, and the health and scalability of the web platform.
  • Improve frontend developer experience by investing in frontend tooling, shared components, continuous integration and delivery, testing, and AI-assisted workflows.
  • Deliver and maintain internal tools used by operations, support, and business teams, treating them as products with real users and clear quality standards.
  • Own the team's risk-related systems and experiences, partnering with Risk and Compliance stakeholders to balance user experience, operational efficiency, and regulatory expectations.
  • Manage third-party vendor relationships, including evaluation, integration, performance, cost, contract renewals, and migrations.
  • Maintain system reliability through observability, a support rotation, incident response, and ongoing technical-debt reduction.
  • Collaborate with the authentication and authorization team on initiatives affecting mobile and web experiences, and translate Platform objectives and key results into a focused quarterly roadmap.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience with mobile continuous integration and delivery, release automation, app store processes, and frontend build tooling at consumer scale.
  • Experience delivering internal platforms or administrative tools that measurably improve the work of operations, support, or business teams.
  • Experience in financial services, payments, fraud, identity verification, or authentication and authorization, including OAuth, OpenID Connect, single sign-on, or multi-factor authentication; hands-on experience with Onfido or Auth0 is a plus.
  • Experience investing in developer-experience tooling, shared components, continuous integration and delivery, and self-service for internal engineers.
  • Interest in using artificial intelligence to accelerate development, testing, and code review, and helping a team adopt these tools thoughtfully.
  • Experience building teams that own systems end to end, from design through on-call operations, with observability and feature-flagged releases.

About the company

KOHO provides a modern alternative to traditional banking in Canada through a prepaid Visa card and a mobile app. It targets individuals who want simple, transparent money management with fewer fees. Users load funds onto a prepaid card, spend with cash back on purchases, and can access features like credit-building services and early payroll. The app shows spending and balances in real time, helping users manage money without a traditional bank account. KOHO makes money mainly from merchant interchange fees when users pay with the card and from optional premium services, while offering a free base product. Unlike typical banks or some fintechs, KOHO emphasizes a free-to-use app and card with clear fees and control over finances.

Koho becomes Canada's latest unicorn with $130M Series E as it nears banking licence

Koho Financial has raised $130 million in a Series E round, valuing the Canadian challenger bank at $1.33 billion and making it the country's latest unicorn. The all-equity financing will provide the capital base required for Koho to become a federally regulated bank. The round was backed by new investors including Abu Dhabi's Mubadala, Savano Capital, Shopify CEO Tobi Lütke and Affirm COO Michael Linford, alongside existing investors Portage, BDC Capital and Drive Capital. The company has now raised $507 million in total funding. Founded in 2014, Koho has surpassed 2.5 million users and generates approximately $250 million in annual revenue, growing 50 per cent year-over-year. The company is navigating the final stages of obtaining a Schedule 1 banking licence, a process it began five years ago.

KOHO launches crypto trading with fees from 0.5% for 2.5M Canadian users

KOHO has launched KOHO Crypto, a new offering allowing its 2.5 million Canadian users to buy, hold and manage cryptocurrency directly within the KOHO app. Powered by regulated exchange Ndax, the service features some of Canada's lowest trading fees, starting at 0.5% per trade for KOHO Everything plan members. Users can access over 20 cryptocurrencies including Bitcoin, Ethereum and Solana, with purchases funded instantly from their KOHO balance. The platform requires no foreign exchange fees, offers instant settlement and allows trading from as little as $1. Assets are held with qualified custodians through Ndax's regulated infrastructure. KOHO CEO Daniel Eberhard said the launch addresses barriers around complexity and cost that have prevented average Canadians from accessing crypto. Additional features include price alerts, recurring purchases and in-app education tools.

Tight Credit Market Creates ‘Goldilocks Scenario’ For Alternative Lenders

Mainstream banks and credit unions are re-examining their underwriting standards across consumer and commercial lending. As Clive Kinross, CEO of FinTech Propel Holdings, told PYMNTS CEO Karen Webster, the credit pipeline is about “as tight as it’s been over the last 10 years.” Tariff-related macro uncertainty means that consumers who would otherwise qualify for mainstream credit are now finding themselves in different segments of the market. The Federal Reserve Bank of New York reported in May that late-stage delinquencies on revolving debt surged year over year. Household debt reached $18.2 trillion in the first quarter, increasing by $167 billion, a 0.9% rise from Q4 2024 and a 2.9% year-over-year increase. This marked the lowest annual growth rate since Q1 2021
