Requirements
  • Advanced expertise in the standard practices of neurocritical care.
  • Ability to interact diplomatically and flexibly with doctors, nurses, other paramedical personnel, administrators, emergency personnel, and law enforcement officers.
  • Ability to clearly communicate medical information to a broad variety of people in person and by telephone.
  • Advanced knowledge of medical history requirements and skill in taking patient histories.
  • Advanced knowledge of when specific diagnostic tests are indicated according to written protocol.
  • Skill in performing diagnostic tests according to protocol.
  • Advanced skill in reading medical instruments, editing data for errors, and making necessary corrections to treatment modalities.
  • Advanced skill in operating specialized medical equipment and learning new medical equipment and procedures, including intracranial pressure monitoring devices, central venous pressure monitors, neuroelectrophysiological machines, pulmonary respirators, cardioverter or cardiac defibrillators, transducer systems, digital read-out equipment, and medical computer systems.
  • Ability to perform invasive medical procedures, including central venous catheter placement, arterial line placement, and lumbar punctures, with knowledge of their indications, complications, and monitoring requirements.
  • Writing skills to prepare clear medical reports, laboratory data, and progress notes.
  • At least 2 years of neurocritical care or related experience.
  • Licensure through the California Physician Assistant Board as a physician assistant.
  • A National Provider Identifier, or the ability to obtain one before employment begins, and compliance with current Medicare billing requirements.
  • Current DEA Registration with schedules 2, 2N, 3, 3N, 4, and 5, and state-issued prescribing authority if applicable.
  • National board certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants at the time of initial appointment.
  • Current Basic Life Support and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support certification from an American Heart Association-approved course.
  • Documentation of the number and types of cases and procedures performed during the past 24 months, representative of the requested privileges.
  • Compliance with the legal requirements to practice as a physician assistant in California.
  • Legal authorization to work in the United States.
Responsibilities
  • Provide direct patient care through physical assessment and medical intervention in the Neurocritical Care Center.
  • Perform neurological and general physical examinations.
  • Manage care related to Institutional Review Board biomedical protocols in the Neurocritical Care Center.
  • Collaborate with research staff in developing and conducting research.
  • Disseminate research findings through written publications, professional meetings, and community programs.
  • Practice pursuant to a practice agreement through the Department of Neurology.
  • Maintain policies and protocols established by the Committee on Interdisciplinary Practice and the Medical Director of the Medical Staffing Department.
  • Participate in teaching activities with fellows, residents, students, and community members.
  • Provide clinical supervision of the medical practices of fellows, residents, and students.

  • Experience in the intensive care unit, preferably with neurology and neurosurgical patients.
  • Ability to provide teaching and education activities to fellows, residents, medical students, and community members.
