Requirements
  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • A Medical Assistant certificate of completion from an appropriately accredited program or institute is required; relevant work experience may substitute, but post-education Medical Assistant certification must be presented or obtained.
  • A credentialed Medical Assistant certification from a recognized accrediting or certifying body is required, including Certified Medical Assistant, Registered Medical Assistant, Certified Clinical Medical Assistant, National Certified Medical Assistant, or Nationally Registered Certified Medical Assistant.
  • If the required credentialed Medical Assistant certification is not obtained at hire, it must be obtained within 12 months of the hire date as a condition of continued employment.
  • Active American Heart Association Basic Life Support certification for healthcare providers is required.
  • A Florida HIV/AIDS Healthcare Professional Continuing Education Certificate is required.
  • Strong communication skills with patients, families, and the clinical team are required.
  • The ability to adapt and remain flexible in changing environments is required.
  • Strong time management skills and the ability to prioritize and act proactively are required.
  • The ability to uphold professional ethics and maintain patient confidentiality is required.
Responsibilities
  • Assist medical providers with multi-skilled clinical tasks and patients’ healthcare management under the supervision of a licensed physician.
  • Provide hands-on patient care while following regulatory requirements, standards of care, and institutional policies and procedures.
  • Support patients’ individual needs, spiritual beliefs, faith, and practices using appropriate care methods.
  • Establish trusting relationships with patients and families, identify and manage discomfort, and provide emotional support.
  • Prioritize and integrate multiple requests and work expectations by performing tasks safely, professionally, and in a timely manner.
  • Communicate clearly with patients, families, and appropriate team members, and seek assistance when needed.
  • Participate in unit or clinic programs and meetings and contribute to team building and constructive conflict resolution.
  • Use available technology resources for communication, documentation, and locating pertinent clinical information about diagnoses and treatments.
  • Maintain current clinical practice knowledge and competencies and complete ongoing professional development.
  • Ensure compliance with state and federal regulatory guidelines, including the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act.
  • Perform within the clinical scope of practice and follow applicable state, federal, university, and unit standards, guidelines, statutes, rules, regulations, protocols, and standards of care.
  • Provide and accept focused constructive feedback and guidance in a manner that supports growth and self-esteem.
  • Follow ethical behavior and therapeutic communication standards and protect patient information privacy.
  • Assist providers with physical examinations by preparing treatment and examination rooms with the required supplies, instruments, and materials.
  • Explain examination procedures and prepare patients for physician care with basic instructions and information.
  • Perform vital signs, electrocardiograms, and phlebotomy, and document results in the patient medical record.
  • Clean and sterilize medical instruments while observing sterile technique.
  • Schedule patients for tests and complete required laboratory-work forms.
  • Maintain accurate and complete patient records and documentation.
  • Order, stock, and inventory supplies and assist with clerical duties.
  • Follow university and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguard university assets.
