Requirements
  • Evidence of teaching potential.
  • A thorough knowledge of horticulture and comfort teaching courses related to wood plant identification, herbaceous plant identification, plant science, soil science, landscape graphics, landscape design, landscape computer-aided design, greenhouse production and management, or golf course management.
  • Familiarity with appropriate instructional and course management software.
  • The ability to communicate effectively with both small and large groups.
  • Proficiency in designing and grading tests.
  • The ability to create effective instructional materials.
  • Experience in a related horticultural, agronomy, landscape, or agricultural field appropriate to the class being taught may substitute for education.
  • Up to one year of specialized or technical training beyond high school.
  • Familiarity with process-based writing, adult learning theory, and current pedagogical strategies that enhance students' critical thinking.
  • The ability to enhance instruction through technology and use effective classroom management.
  • The ability to work collaboratively with faculty and administration.
  • The ability to work with small groups and maintain a positive demeanor in the presence of students.
Responsibilities
  • Teach undergraduate, college-level, and pre-college-level science composition and science-related courses, including lecture and laboratory sections as assigned.
  • Support student success by creating an optimum learning environment and responding to student needs.
  • Develop a syllabus using the assigned syllabus shell, including an evaluation procedure and assignment calendar aligned with the course outline.
  • Prepare lesson plans and conduct classes during scheduled times using department-approved texts.
  • Follow department guidelines for course content and best practices.
  • Meet all classes on scheduled dates, on time, and for the fully allotted time.
  • Respect Owens Community College standards for web instruction when teaching online.
  • Use appropriate classroom management techniques and approved instructional technology.
  • Create and evaluate assignments, evaluative measures, and activities appropriate to the class.
  • Assign grades and return graded work in a timely manner.
  • Maintain accurate attendance records, report attendance by published deadlines, and maintain an electronic grade book.
  • Report final grades and submit electronic grade book and attendance records to the department by the required deadline.
  • Administer course evaluations as instructed by the college.
  • Use the college course management system for assigned courses and department matters.
  • Use Microsoft Office Suite and other required, approved, and Owens-system-compatible programs.
  • Submit requested electronic documents, including syllabi, grade books, attendance records, and other files, to the department course management site.
  • Access the Owens email account daily, communicate with students and the department chair, and respond to required messages within 48 hours.
  • Check the campus mailbox weekly and respond to student inquiries outside class in a timely manner.
  • Meet with students outside class when necessary.
  • Attend department and college workshops, training sessions, development activities, and meetings as needed.
  • Participate in student learning assessment activities and perform other assigned departmental duties.
  • Support the college, School of STEM, and department missions and values while maintaining professional and collegial conduct.
