Requirements
  • An M.D. or D.O. degree.
  • At least one year of experience in the clinical or laboratory aspects of transfusion and apheresis medicine beyond transfusion medicine fellowship training, including medical supervision of transfusion services or blood donor activities.
  • Currently hold, or be able to obtain within six months of employment, a full medical license in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Nebraska, Kansas, Missouri, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Delaware, Pennsylvania, or Maryland.
  • Currently hold, or be able to obtain within six months of employment, a New York State Certificate of Qualification in Blood Collection – Comprehensive.
  • Currently hold, or be able to obtain within six months of employment, a New York State Certificate of Qualification in Transfusion Services.
  • Have the ability to cover up to five CLIA-licensed laboratories associated with New York Blood Center Enterprises.
  • Board certification in Clinical Pathology, Hematology, or Pediatric Hematology plus Blood Banking/Transfusion Medicine is required.
  • Expert knowledge of state and federal regulations.
  • Ability to travel up to 25%.
  • Ability to provide medical directorship face-to-face, by phone or web meeting, or on-call to various groups.
  • Ability to lead, direct, and mentor staff.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and authoritatively in writing and verbally, in one-on-one or small-group settings.
  • Ability to plan and organize job tasks or resources efficiently.
  • Ability to respond to management and address issues and concerns as they arise.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment while managing multiple competing tasks and demands.
  • Ability to use logic and reasoning to analyze alternative solutions, conclusions, or approaches within established policies and procedures.

Responsibilities
  • Provide medical directorship for the technical and clinical operations of blood center laboratories at NYBC, RIBC, and BBD.
  • Provide support and guidance to collections staff, internal stakeholders, and customer hospitals.
  • Participate in teaching, research, quality improvement, and continuous learning.
  • Support management in making informed medical decisions.
  • Develop and review medical oversight and responsibility for technical and medical policies.
  • Provide daily coverage for donor-criteria questions, support the on-call fellow as backup, make decisions according to medical criteria, and respond to donor and hospital questions.
  • Contribute to developing procedures, job aids, work instructions, and medical criteria for frontline staff.
  • Participate in transfusion medicine fellow and other postgraduate teaching activities, including presentations for NYBC Enterprises webinar series, Lab Week, and Beyond Essentials.
  • Build close relationships with clinical and frontline staff and provide expert consultation internally and to hospitals.
  • Ensure participation in quality-assurance activities and high performance of assigned programs and services.
  • Participate in regional, national, and international societies dedicated to transfusion medicine, apheresis medicine, or cellular therapies.
  • Publish articles, chapters, and books, and deliver lectures and presentations at local, national, and international levels.
