Apparatus is a design studio that creates lighting, furniture, and objects, primarily marketed through its own galleries. Its product line balances sensual craftsmanship with modern form, produced in a New York factory where pieces are finished by hand. The company emphasizes a Gesamtkunstwerk approach, treating each item as part of a larger, holistic design vision that considers how objects interact with their environment. Collections are narrative-driven and draw on historical and cultural moods, using materials such as marble, suede, horsehair, lacquer, porcelain, and hand-patinated brass. Apparatus differentiates itself by combining design, manufacturing, and direct-to-consumer sales through immersive showrooms in New York, Los Angeles, and London, rather than relying solely on third-party retailers. Its goal is to provide luxury, artisanal objects that function as components of a unified, artful interior, balancing craftsmanship with contemporary design.
