Requirements
  • High school graduation or equivalent and one year of chemical, clinical, or public health laboratory experience, or completion of a laboratory assistant course approved by the American Society for Clinical Pathology.
  • Equivalent education and/or experience may substitute for minimum qualifications except where legal requirements such as licensing, certification, or registration apply.
  • Medical Assistant–Phlebotomist certification with the Washington State Department of Health, or the ability to obtain it within 180 days of the start date.
Responsibilities
  • Receive, sort, and prioritize specimens and testing requests.
  • Match specimens against requisitions to verify the appropriate tube type.
  • Centrifuge and aliquot specimens.
  • Process timed urine collections.
  • Result and review entries for reference laboratory testing.
  • Perform blood draws on patients.
  • Perform laboratory computer functions.
  • Respond promptly, courteously, and professionally to inquiries from patients, clients, and hospital and laboratory staff.
  • Orient and train new employees.
  • Participate in performance improvement activities.
  • Support the hospital in meeting Joint Commission, Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments, and College of American Pathologists accreditation standards.
  • Resolve specimen- and order-related problems in a timely, thorough, and accurate manner.
  • Provide appropriate documentation for supervisor review.
Desired Qualifications
  • An associate or bachelor’s degree in science.
  • Experience in a major medical hospital laboratory.
  • Experience with a Laboratory Information System.
