  • A strong understanding of laser beam propagation through turbulent media, including beam wander, scintillation, and the use of link budgets to predict system return rates.
  • Proficiency in signal processing techniques specific to LiDAR or Satellite Laser Ranging, including constant fraction discriminators, range gate optimization, and noise filtering algorithms.
  • Hands-on experience with high-precision timing hardware, including Event Timers and Global Navigation Satellite System synchronization, and an understanding of jitter and latency sources.
  • Strong proficiency in Python for instrument control, drivers, serial communications, and data analysis using NumPy, SciPy, and Pandas.
  • Mandatory experience with Linux environments.
  • Familiarity with telescope mounts, including equatorial and Alt-Az mounts, star tracking, and pointing models.
  • Must have the right to work in the United Kingdom.
  • Ability to work autonomously in a startup environment where requirements evolve.
Responsibilities
  • Create comprehensive Satellite Laser Ranging and Space Debris Laser Ranging performance models, including radiometric link budgets, atmospheric transmission, and detector probability of detection.
  • Lead the design and integration of next-generation laser ranging architectures, select components including pulsed lasers, single-photon detectors, and optics, and oversee the assembly of optical benches.
  • Develop algorithms to process raw time-of-flight data, filter noise from background photons, and refine orbital determination accuracy.
  • Manage the installation of optical ground stations and conduct rigorous Site Acceptance Testing to validate ranging precision and pointing accuracy.
  • Act as a subject-matter expert for laser safety, perform risk assessments, and ensure compliance with United Kingdom and European Union standards such as BS EN 60825 for outdoor laser propagation.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience with FPGA programming for timing applications.
  • Familiarity with orbital mechanics, including TLEs and CPF/CRD formats.
  • Experience with optical design software such as Zemax or Code V.

About the company

Foundational provides a data management platform for organizations using Snowflake, focusing on data quality, governance, and cost optimization. It works by analyzing code and query activity, parsing code, extracting metadata, and automatically enforcing data contracts and quality rules to continuously update data lineage, including column-level lineage beyond the warehouse. Its differentiation comes from tight Snowflake integration, native data quality automation, data contracts, and cross-repository lineage that reduces manual governance work. The goal is to help enterprises keep trustworthy, well-governed data while lowering data-related costs through automated, scalable data quality and lineage management.

What believers are saying

  • 2026 governance demand rises as AI-generated pipelines and provenance audits become mandatory.
  • Foundational says Ramp, Lemonade, and Lightricks trust its workflow integrations.
  • General availability and Foundational IQ expand product surface beyond basic data quality.

What critics are saying

  • Snowflake Horizon and Databricks Unity Catalog already bundle native governance controls.
  • Foundational still relies on an $8 million seed from March 2024.
  • No visible 2026 funding, acquisition, or scale signals reduce hiring stability.

What makes Foundational unique

  • Deterministic code analysis spans SQL, Python, Java, Scala, COBOL across enterprise stacks.
  • Foundational IQ ships native governance inside Snowflake, Databricks, and AWS workflows.
  • Field-level lineage and compliance reporting target regulated evidence needs like HIPAA and SOX.

Foundational launches IQ agent for enterprise AI governance with deterministic code analysis

Foundational has launched Foundational IQ, a conversational AI interface for enterprise data and AI governance that automates complex compliance and lineage workflows. The platform uses deterministic code analysis across SQL, Python, Java, Scala, COBOL and other languages, running natively within enterprise LLMs including Snowflake, Databricks and AWS. The system operates in two modes: Fast mode for immediate queries and Thinking mode for complex analysis. It can generate audit reports, handle database migrations and classify personally identifiable information—tasks that previously required weeks of manual work. Foundational IQ addresses regulatory requirements including BCBS 239, HIPAA, GDPR and SOX by providing field-level data tracing and lineage documentation. The platform is generally available today as part of Foundational's data governance suite, which analyses source code and transformation pipelines across enterprise systems.

Foundational, a startup aiming to bring order to the chaos of modern data infrastructure, announced today that it has raised $8 million in seed funding led by Viola Ventures and Gradient Ventures, Google’s AI-focused investment fund, with participation from angel investors and other venture firms. The company’s platform automatically maps and analyzes data teams’ code to identify potential issues, suggest fixes, and help prepare data for AI applications. After operating in stealth mode for the past year and a half, Foundational is now making its technology generally available, with public companies like Ramp and Lemonade already signed on as customers. Foundational CEO and cofounder Alon Nafta told VentureBeat in an exclusive interview that the company decided it was the right time to share its story more broadly.“In the past year, year and a half or so, we really built the ability to automatically map and understand the code that data teams are writing, and also connect it to this new AI world or universe that we have,” said Nafta. “And to really understand now how we can leverage it both with AI tooling, but also to prepare the data for AI to consume.”Addressing the data quality crisisNafta, who previously worked in cybersecurity and data infrastructure roles, cofounded Foundational to address the growing pains many organizations face as they scale up their data capabilities

Meet The Uc Berkeley Professor Tracking Election Deepfakes

Not in recent history has a technology come along with the potential to harm society more than deepfakes. The manipulative, insidious AI-generated content is already being weaponized in politics and will be pervasive in the upcoming U.S. Presidential election, as well as those in the Senate and the House of Representatives. As regulators grapple to control the technology, incredibly realistic deepfakes are being used to smear candidates, sway public opinion and manipulate voter turnout. On the other hand, some candidates, in backfired attempts, have turned to generative AI to help bolster their campaigns.University of California, Berkeley’s School of Information Professor Hany Farid has had enough of all this. He has launched a project dedicated to tracking deepfakes throughout the 2024 presidential campaign
