GTT Energy unveils liquefied gas shipping innovations at Gastech 2026. GTT Energy, the group unit responsible for containment and energy management systems, used Gastech 2026 to showcase a collection of innovations intended to boost the economic, energy and environmental results of liquefied gas shipping, according to GTT. In a press release dated 15 September 2026, the unit introduced two offerings. One is a next-generation containment solution for liquefied natural gas fuel, built to strengthen a vessel's overall economic performance. The other is the LNG Performance Centre, a new service ecosystem for LNG carriers meant to give ship-owners, charterers and crews clearer insight into vessel operations. That centre combines three fields of expertise: cargo management, voyage optimisation and monitoring of containment system performance. In addition to those two announcements, GTT showcased other work that reflects its stated dedication to ongoing innovation in LNG and ethane transportation and environmental performance. LNG carrier developments. For a 174,000 cubic metre LNG carrier fitted with GTT NEXT1 membrane technology, GTT and Hudong-Zhonghua secured Approvals in Principle from the American Bureau of Shipping, Bureau Veritas, China Classification Society, DNV and Lloyd's Register. The design offers a guaranteed boil-off rate of 0.07 percent, enhancing overall vessel efficiency. A Joint Development Project was announced by GTT, Shell and Lloyd's Register for a conceptual 200,000 cubic metre LNG carrier pairing hybrid-electric propulsion with GTT NEXT1 cargo containment technology. The concept seeks to explore ways to raise LNG carrying capacity, improve operational efficiency and provide flexibility for evolving regulatory requirements. From Lloyd's Register, GTT obtained an Approval in Principle for a 7.5-year dry-docking interval for LNG carriers using GTT membrane containment systems, longer than the standard five-year interval. This extended maintenance window could raise vessel availability while cutting maintenance needs and related costs, without weakening safety or reliability standards. A study by GTT and Lloyd's Register Advisory confirmed that 200,000 cubic metre LNG carriers are compatible with most existing LNG terminals. The results support the possibility of increasing cargo capacity and transportation efficiency without fundamental changes to existing terminal infrastructure. Ethane transportation. To develop and technically assess a 150,000 cubic metre ultra-large ethane carrier using GTT's Mark III Slim technology, GTT, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries and Lloyd's Register started a Joint Development Project. The effort targets the needs of a new generation of higher-capacity ethane carriers. An Approval in Principle from DNV was granted to GTT and Hudong-Zhonghua for a 100,500 cubic metre very large ethane carrier fitted with GTT's NO96 Super+ containment system. The vessel also includes a bi-oblique number four tank intended to optimise available space and maximise cargo capacity. Environmental footprint. Following an earlier Approval in Principle from Bureau Veritas at SMM 2026, GTT received an Approval in Principle from Lloyd's Register for its 2 barg membrane technology, designed specifically for container ships. Created to address shore-power operation and increasingly strict environmental requirements, the solution extends holding time in port with minimal or no gas consumption. An insulation solution using hydrofluoroolefins with better thermal performance, developed by Dongsung Finetec, passed all qualification and certification stages under GTT's evaluation process. This milestone aids GTT's shift away from hydrofluorocarbon blowing agents toward very low global warming potential alternatives used in its membrane containment technologies.
150,000 cbm ULEC project targets larger-scale ethane transport with GTT technology. September 21, 2026 0 views New 150000 cbm ULEC project targets larger-scale ethane transportation with GTT's latest cargo containment system HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, GTT and LR have launched a joint project to develop a 150,000 cbm ultra-large ethane carrier, exploring the next step in large-scale ethane transportation. Lloyd's Register (LR), HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) and GTT have signed a joint development project (JDP) agreement to develop and technically assess a 150,000 cbm ultra-large ethane carrier (ULEC), incorporating GTT's Mark III Slim design. Announced at Gastech 2026 in Bangkok, the project will bring together HHI's shipbuilding expertise, GTT's cargo containment technology and LR's classification and technical assurance capabilities to develop and review the vessel design in accordance with LR Rules. The 150,000 cbm ULEC concept is the largest vessel design for the ethane carrier segment. As ethane trade volumes continue to grow and voyage economics become an increasingly important consideration for operators, the industry is exploring larger vessel concepts capable of transporting greater cargo volumes while maintaining high standards of safety, operability and efficiency. Through the JDP, the partners will evaluate the technical challenges and opportunities associated with scaling ethane carrier capacity to 150,000 cbm. The project will focus on vessel design development, cargo containment integration, safety considerations and compliance with applicable classification and regulatory requirements. The collaboration aims to establish a robust technical foundation for future ultra-large ethane carrier projects while providing greater understanding of the design, operational and safety considerations associated with vessels of this scale. Constantinos Chaelis, Global Gas Segment Director, LR, said: "As the ethane trade expands, owners are looking for larger and more efficient vessel concepts that can deliver operational and commercial advantages without compromising safety or reliability. "This collaboration provides an opportunity to apply our advanced gas carrier expertise to the development of a credible and technically robust 150,000 cbm ULEC concept that helps establish a clear technical pathway for future projects in this segment." Hongryeul Ryu, Chief Technology Officer, HHI, said: "HHI has continuously pursued technological innovation, with optimized ship designs tailored to operating conditions and customer requirements serving as one of its core design values. "This JDP is founded on the same design philosophy and aims to introduce a new solution that enhances both vessel performance and economic efficiency. "HHI's 150,000 cbm ULEC, incorporating the MARK III SLIM design, is expected to become a next-generation vessel that achieves both weight reduction and improved performance. Furthermore, this project is anticipated to represent an important milestone in establishing a new paradigm for ship design through the application of the latest cargo containment system (CCS)." François Michel, Chief Executive Officer, GTT, said: "Thanks to the versatility of our technologies, we can deliver greater efficiency across ethane transportation. With Mark III Slim, this translates into increased cargo capacity and shorter vessel construction times. GTT, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries and Lloyd's Register share the ambition and responsibility to advance a new generation of increasingly efficient vessels that maintain the same rigorous standards of safety, reliability and industrial compliance."
BetterSea brings FuelEU trading tools to GTT platform. FuelEU compliance specialist BetterSea has agreed to a white-label partnership with GTT Marine to bring trading, pooling, and reporting tools into GTT's Vesper Insights platform. The integration will allow shipowners, operators and charterers to manage FuelEU obligations without leaving Vesper Insights. Users will have access to BetterSea's marketplace, scenario modelling, pooling services and post-trade workflows, alongside tools for preparing Thetis submissions. The companies said the arrangement is intended to move customers beyond simply monitoring their compliance position. Users will be able to compare strategies, assess potential costs, trade FuelEU surplus, form pools and manage the resulting documentation through one interface. FuelEU Maritime permits vessels to combine compliance balances, allowing surplus generated by one ship to offset a deficit on another, subject to regulatory conditions. The mechanism has created demand for platforms that can connect calculations and verified data with commercial execution. "By embedding our platform into GTT Marine's Vesper Insights offering, we are giving customers a seamless and efficient path from compliance understanding to full trading and pooling execution," Maximilian Schroer, BetterSea's co-CEO.
