  • Experience working across multiple jurisdictions, in transfer pricing, coordinating local teams, and knowledge of OECD/BEPS regulations.
  • Experience implementing or migrating tax compliance systems, automating tax processes, and integrating with ERP systems.
  • Experience representing the company in tax audits, defending tax positions, and resolving requests from tax authorities.
  • Ability to identify tax risks, prepare risk maps, define mitigation measures, and provide for contingencies.

Responsibilities

  • Define and execute VANA's multinational corporate tax strategy for Guatemala, Honduras, the Dominican Republic, Peru, and future operating markets, aligning tax compliance and legal tax optimization with corporate financial strategy in coordination with the CFO.
  • Identify and assess lawful tax-efficiency opportunities, including transfer-pricing planning, holding structures, local incentives, and advance rulings; document, submit for approval, and implement them in accordance with regulations.
  • Monitor regulatory changes in each country, update the tax strategy as needed, and present quarterly executive reports on tax impacts.
  • Oversee complete compliance with tax obligations, including returns, tax payments, special reports, and informational filings, across VANA and affiliated companies in current and future operating markets.
  • Coordinate with local accountants and external advisers to meet each country's tax deadlines and regulatory requirements; maintain a centralized, current register of deadlines, obligations, and compliance status by country.
  • Manage tax audits, authority requests, and tax litigation, escalating potential risks proactively to the CFO, with a goal of avoiding penalties or fines resulting from tax noncompliance.
  • Lead the strategic adoption of VANA tax-compliance products in each market and ensure entities, operations, and affiliates use appropriate solutions.
  • Propose product improvements based on implementation experience, local-team feedback, regulatory changes, and international benchmarking; document use cases, train country teams, and measure implementation impact using KPIs.
  • Manage relationships with software providers and VANA product developers to support ongoing alignment.
  • Prepare consolidated monthly, quarterly, and annual tax reports covering tax position by country, tax payment flows, forecast variances, recommended actions, and emerging risk analysis.
  • Prepare ad hoc tax-impact analyses for operational changes, M&A transactions, legislative changes, and new markets; present findings to the CFO, board, or relevant stakeholders and ensure analyses are documented and traceable.
  • Oversee external tax advisory firms in operating markets, coordinating scopes of work, budgets, and deliverable schedules; evaluate advisory quality and change providers when needed.
  • Lead communications with local tax authorities, respond to information requests, coordinate complex tax filings, and defend tax positions during audits and administrative proceedings; negotiate fees and services to optimize external costs without compromising quality.
  • Develop annual and multi-year tax forecasts by country and on a consolidated basis, including estimated tax payments, tax contingencies, tax-system investments, external advisory costs, and new markets.
  • Coordinate with Finance to incorporate tax budgets into the consolidated corporate budget; monitor execution monthly, analyze significant variances, and propose adjustments.
  • Provide Treasury with tax cash-flow projections to support treasury planning.
  • Lead and train local tax specialists or coordinate with local accountants who report to regional directors; define quality standards, best practices, and work protocols aligned with VANA.
  • Conduct quarterly training on tax changes, VANA tools, and practical tax-optimization cases; assess local-team performance, identify competency gaps, and promote ongoing professional development.
  • Conduct corporate tax-risk assessments, identify high-risk operations, structures vulnerable to audit, adverse regulatory changes, and emerging-market risks; propose mitigations such as additional documentation, operational restructuring, accounting provisions, and insurance coverage.
  • Prepare country-level risk maps with estimated likelihood and impact, and regularly communicate material tax risks to the CFO and board.
  • Identify tax-process automation opportunities across filings, reporting, reconciliations, records, and compliance monitoring; propose systems that improve efficiency, reduce manual errors, and accelerate reporting.
  • Coordinate with IT to implement tax technology solutions, train users, monitor adoption, and assess new tax-compliance platforms for applicability to VANA and affiliates.
  • Monitor tax-law changes in operating markets and international developments, including BEPS, OECD rules, tax treaties, and digital-asset regulations; communicate relevant changes and recommend proactive process or strategy adaptations.
  • Participate in professional conferences, specialist forums, and tax-expert networks, and maintain a centralized, current library of tax regulations, case law, and interpretations by country.

About the Company

Vana

Mobile app-based micro-loans for the unbanked

Vana is a Latin American fintech that provides micro-loans to people underserved by traditional banks, starting in Guatemala in 2017 and expanding to the Dominican Republic in 2022. Its main product is an Android app that lets users apply for small loans (Q200–Q2,500) in minutes, with cash pickup options for those without bank accounts. The company uses a credit model based on alternative data and machine learning to assess creditworthiness for customers with little or no formal history, and a tiered system rewards on-time repayment by increasing credit limits and lowering rates. Its goal is to expand financial inclusion by delivering accessible credit through a mobile platform and helping users build a credit history quickly without relying on traditional banks.
