Requirements
  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Within the first year, complete the Sterile Processing Department Readiness Course or obtain national certification through the Healthcare Sterile Processing Association or the Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution.
  • Maintain required continuing education units in accordance with the certifying body.
  • Have at least one year of sterile processing experience, or at least nine months of experience with certification or completion of the Sterile Processing Department Readiness Course.
Responsibilities
  • Apply high professional and ethical standards when making critical decisions throughout the sterilization process.
  • Use microbiology and infection-control knowledge to determine the best processing method for changing, highly technical patient-care instrumentation and equipment.
  • Apply advanced knowledge of surgical instrumentation function during patient care in the operating-room suite in at least one surgical specialty.
  • Perform decontamination of surgical instrumentation and a wide variety of patient equipment.
  • Sterilize instrumentation, equipment, and supplies requested by customer departments.
  • Maintain daily records and perform chemical, mechanical, and biological monitoring related to sterilization processes.
  • Participate in the preceptorship and orientation of new team members.
  • Distribute instrument trays for surgical case carts according to the surgery schedule, pick lists, and surgeons' preference cards.
  • Demonstrate a clear practical understanding of instrumentation used during surgical procedures.
  • Consult and work directly with the Sterile Processing Department Supervisor and/or Sterile Processing Department Operations Specialist regarding unit activities.
  • Advocate for the safest and most appropriate sterilization method for patient-use instrumentation and equipment.
  • Maintain a safe environment through specific infection-control procedures.
  • Maintain regular and punctual attendance consistent with applicable policies and standards.
  • Comply with all Baptist Health policies and procedures.
