JD- AWS Mainframe Modernisation Architect
We are seeking an experienced AWS Mainframe Modernization Architect to lead the transformation of legacy mainframe platforms into scalable, cloud‑native architectures on Amazon Web Services (AWS). This role requires deep expertise in mainframe application, data, and infrastructure modernization, hands-on knowledge of AWS Mainframe Modernization services, and the ability to guide enterprise customers through end-to-end modernization journeys including assessment, migration, Replatforming, and Refactoring.
Key Responsibilities
1. Modernization Strategy & Architecture
- Lead modernization assessments including portfolio analysis, workload classification, TCO/ROI modelling, and target-state blueprint creation.
- Define modernization approaches such as re-hosting, re-platforming, re-factoring, re-engineering, and COTS migration for mainframe workloads.
- Architect end-to-end AWS cloud solutions including compute, storage, networking, databases, security, DevOps, and integration patterns.
2. AWS Mainframe Modernization Expertise
Design and implement solutions using:
- AWS Mainframe Modernization Service (Blu Age/AWS Transform Refactor / Microfocus/Rocketsoftware Replatform)
- Amazon Aurora / RDS, DynamoDB for data modernization
- AWS DMS/ SCT for database migration
- AWS Glue, EMR, Lambda, Step Functions for batch modernization
- Amazon MQ / MSK / SQS for message queue migration
- Define COBOL/JCL modernization strategies for batch and online workloads (CICS/IMS/TPS).
3. Mainframe Platform Expertise
Deep knowledge of legacy systems:
- COBOL, JCL, CICS, VSAM, DB2, IMS, PL/I
- Scheduling (Control-M, CA7), Job orchestration, security (RACF/ACF2)
- Analyze code, dependencies, data flows, and operational procedures to design cloud-native equivalents.
4. Migration Delivery Leadership
- Oversee end-to-end modernization program delivery.
- Lead multi-disciplinary teams (application, data, infra, DevOps).
- Create modernization roadmaps, estimation models, and cutover strategies.
- Ensure scalability, performance, resilience, and security compliance.
5. DevOps & Automation
Co-Ordinate and oversee modernization DevOps pipelines for:
- Automated code conversion / build
- Testing frameworks
- CI/CD using AWS CodePipeline, GitHub, Jenkins, Terraform/CloudFormation
- Define operational models for post-modernization workloads.
6. Stakeholder & Customer Management
- Conduct customer workshops and technical deep dives.
- Present architecture options, trade-offs, and modernization PoCs.
- Act as the technical authority during RFP/RFI responses and pre-sales engagements.
Required Skills & Competencies
Technical Skills
- 15+ years of IT experience with 5+ years in mainframe modernization.
- Strong AWS experience with AWS Solution Architect Certification (Professional preferred).
- Hands-on experience with Mainframe Refactoring Tools (Blu Age/AWS Transform)
- Database conversion (DB2 → Aurora/Postgres, VSAM → NoSQL)
- Batch orchestration modernization
- API enablement (REST)
- Preferred to have experience with
Mainframe Replatforming (Microfocus/Rocketsoftware)
Mainframe Portfolio Assessment Tools (CAST Highlight, CAST Imaging)
Mainframe Expertise
- COBOL, JCL, CICS, VSAM, DB2, IMS DB/DC, IBM MQ etc
- Mainframe debugging and performance optimization
- Security systems like RACF
Cloud & Integration
- Strong understanding of cloud-native architecture patterns
- Event-driven designs, microservices, messaging patterns
- API gateways, service mesh, containerization (ECS/EKS), and serverless
