The new language of automotive recycling.

The new language of automotive recycling. Effective communication is becoming a competitive advantage for automotive recyclers as customers increasingly research, compare and contact businesses online. Strong websites, reviews, email marketing, digital channels and AI can help recyclers build trust, respond faster and encourage repeat sales, ensuring they remain visible and relevant throughout the customer journey. Georgia Carver, Director at The Business Birds, a marketing agency specialising in the automotive recycling sector, discusses why effective communication has become a competitive advantage for recyclers. She explores how websites, reviews, email, digital channels and AI are reshaping the way businesses build trust, win customers and generate repeat sales. Why communication before, during and after the sale is every recycler's competitive advantage. For decades, communication in the automotive recycling industry was relatively simple. The phone rang. Your salesperson found the part, built the relationship and won the sale. If you looked after your customers, they'd ring again next time. For many businesses, that formula still works. But communication has changed. Today's customer doesn't simply pick up the phone. They search Google. They ask AI. They compare businesses online. They read reviews. They visit websites. According to Bazaarvoice's 2025 Shopper Experience Index, 75% of consumers research online before making a purchase, even if they ultimately buy offline. Trust is being built long before your salesperson picks up the phone. The phone hasn't disappeared. It's simply become one part of a much bigger conversation. eCommerce continues to grow, with platforms such as eBay and URG's recently launched Auto Part Search making it easier than ever for buyers to source recycled parts online. The opportunity now isn't simply to sell parts online. It's to communicate better online. Your website is no longer just an online brochure. It's often your best salesperson. More importantly, it's now speaking to more than just people. Search engines and AI tools are constantly reading your website to understand what your business does. The more useful and relevant your content is, the more likely your business is to appear when someone searches for the parts or services you provide. Good website copy isn't about filling pages with keywords anymore. It's about answering the questions your customers are already asking. Google Reviews have evolved into a critical communication and trust-building asset rather than a simple metric for customer satisfaction. Because they form the first impression a new customer has of your business, having a proactive review strategy is non-negotiable; 81% of consumers check feedback before ever visiting a business (WiserReview, 2026). 89% of consumers expect businesses to respond to their reviews, but 95% of businesses ignore them, meaning a commitment to replying to feedback gives you the competitive edge. The same applies to the way customers contact you. While the phone remains critical, many buyers expect options. Web chat, text messaging, WhatsApp, email and online forms allow customers to contact your business in the way that's convenient for them. It's about communicating how your customers want to communicate. Without question, one of the biggest opportunities the industry continues to overlook is email. Many recyclers have thousands of customer records built over decades of trading, yet few communicate strategically with them after the part has been sold. This is a massive missed opportunity. 59% of consumers state that marketing emails directly influence their purchase decisions (OptinMonster), making it an ideal channel to drive repeat business. Imagine automatically reminding repairers and shops about new arrivals, seasonal promotions, or warranty information. For every $1 spent on email marketing, you can expect an average return of $40 (Omnisend). To put it simply, staying in touch ensures your business remains the first one they think of when the next repair comes through the workshop. An email marketing strategy that provides value to your customers is not spamming. That's maintaining relationships. Artificial intelligence is accelerating this shift even further. AI is helping customers find information faster, helping businesses answer enquiries sooner and making communication more efficient than ever before. The businesses that benefit most are those using it to enhance the customer experience. One thing I've noticed after marketing auto recyclers across Australia, the US and the UK for over a decade, is that the businesses growing the fastest aren't always the biggest. They're often the ones communicating strategically. That's the magic of online - it levels the playing field for smaller yards, provided they're communicating consistently and strategically. They educate customers on how they can help them by communicating who they are, what they do, and why they're different. They continue the conversation and nurture the customer after the sale has been made. The future of automotive recycling isn't just about better buying, better inventory, better pricing or better technology. It's about better communication. Businesses that educate, communicate consistently, respond quickly, build trust and stay visible will be the ones customers remember when it's time to buy again. About georgia Carver. "We help automotive recycling businesses get seen, get sorted and grow without the guesswork. No fluff. No marketing theatre. Just smart strategy, sharp execution and a team that knows the industry and gets it done."

eBay is pulling airbags from its marketplace over potential safety risks.

eBay is pulling airbags from its marketplace over potential safety risks. The world's biggest online marketplace sells an astonishing assortment of car parts, but eBay has finally drawn the line at airbags Published: 31 Aug 2026, 20:46 UTC - By: Photo: IIHS The headline is eBay banning airbags. Not specific brands or models. Not suspicious-looking replacement units. Not airbags from questionable sellers. All standalone airbags, inflators, and steering wheel airbag covers will be prohibited from the marketplace on September 24, 2026. eBay announced the change in a seller update, saying it made this decision after a comprehensive review of the potential risks these products can pose to customers. Sellers have little time to go through their active, scheduled, and draft listings to remove anything caught by the new rules. Once September 24, 2026, arrives, the company will simply remove listings that remain online. This isn't merely about making sellers jump through compliance hoops. Automotive airbags carry risks because a counterfeit or a manufacturing defect can turn a relatively mundane crash into something much worse. That problem has already produced some horrifying results. A simple Google search will bring forth results of cases in which counterfeit airbag modules or inflators didn't function as intended, injuring the occupant or leading to their demise. Also worth noting, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration got involved as well. Following a high-profile case in which the owner of a 2020 model year Chevrolet Malibu died after the counterfeit airbag exploded violently rather than deploying as intended, the federal watchdog issued a special order seeking information from eBay concerning sellers and listings involving airbags produced by Chinese supplier DTN. Photo: NHTSA DTN stands for Jilin Province Detiannuo Safety Technology, an obscure automotive safety parts manufacturer from the Middle Kingdom known for making cheap airbags. DTN states on its website that its airbag modules are not allowed to be sold in the United States, yet some of them do trickle in via third parties that include eBay sellers. Detiannuo was ultimately found liable for $603 million in damages. Looking at the bigger picture, eBay is not wasting its time policing every individual airbag listing. The prohibition applies throughout the airbag category and isn't limited to counterfeit or unverified parts. There is an important distinction to make, though, as eBay isn't banning every component that happens to be part of the airbag system. Outside the United States, pre-approved sellers can continue listing components that don't actually contain an airbag or inflator. eBay specifically names airbag control units, crash or impact sensors, diagnostic modules, and passenger sensors. Used airbags are legitimate recycled vehicle components, and online marketplaces have traditionally provided a way for dismantlers and recyclers to reach customers looking for cheap replacements. eBay's decision will affect many of them, especially those who made a business out of selling parts recovered from end-of-life vehicles. Sellers who try relisting airbags for sale after September 24, 2026, may be faced with restrictions. Considering what can happen when an airbag isn't what it claims to be, eBay clearly views it as a gamble it would rather not take. Liked the article?
