About the job

Requirements
  • Several years of quota-carrying experience in B2B SaaS, closing deals end to end, including security reviews, procurement, and redlines.
  • Experience selling a technical product to technical buyers and holding substantive conversations with engineering leaders.
  • Experience building a sales playbook in an environment that did not have one, or experience as an early sales representative.
  • Ability to write short, specific, and clear outreach and sales communications.
  • Ability to communicate product limitations honestly and prioritize long-term customer trust.
  • Willingness to learn founder-led sales alongside the CEO and take ownership of deals without the founder.
  • Ability to maintain a credible forecast and communicate forecast risks candidly.
  • Ability to collaborate constructively and work with kindness.
  • In-office work in San Francisco is required, along with meaningful in-person time with customers and prospects around the Bay Area.
Responsibilities
  • Own deals from first call through signature, including discovery, technical evaluation, pricing, security review, procurement, and closing.
  • Take over live pipeline from the founder deal by deal and maintain continuity during the first six months.
  • Partner with the Solutions Engineer, who runs the proof of concept, migration, and live build against a prospect’s API, while managing the surrounding sales process.
  • Compete against Redocly, Mintlify, Stoplight, ReadMe, and in-house documentation solutions, and develop an honest response to each competitor.
  • Address enterprise requirements including self-hosting, single sign-on/security assertion markup language, air-gapped deployments, security questionnaires, and procurement.
  • Work with the founders on pricing and packaging as the company learns how to price its product.
  • Expand customers from an initial team and API to adoption across the wider organization.
  • Build qualification criteria, close plans, forecast discipline, and HubSpot pipeline hygiene for use by future sales representatives.
  • Provide feedback to the two sales development representatives on what converts and help improve their outreach.
  • Communicate specific, evidence-based product objections and gaps to the company early.
  • Learn the founder’s sales approach by observing and working alongside the CEO, then demonstrate that deals can close without the founder present.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience at a developer-tools, API, or infrastructure company selling to engineering teams.
  • Experience as the first account executive at a company.
  • Comfort with technical evaluations, including running proof-of-concept projects, understanding what causes them to stall, and ending unproductive evaluations early.
  • Familiarity with HubSpot, Apollo, and Clay, and an instinct for automating sales busywork.
  • Experience using API documentation products and informed opinions about their quality.
  • Experience selling against an incumbent product customers are merely tolerating.

About the company

Scalar is an open-source API platform focused on OpenAPI specifications. It provides tools to author, validate, test, and share API documentation, and to generate an API client from the spec. The platform keeps the OpenAPI document at the center of development and offers interactive, customizable docs published through a hosted service called Scalar Docs, with a free tier and paid options. Its open-core model combines openly available tools with a managed publishing service to help developers publish and maintain API documentation more efficiently.

Simplify's Take

What believers are saying

  • September 1, 2026 pricing adds Pro, Business, and Enterprise tiers with clear expansion paths.
  • March 17, 2026 Agent MCP servers and March 25 OAuth support target AI-native developer workflows.
  • August 2026 blog says only ten developers donated $21,232 to open-source maintainers.

What critics are saying

  • Free self-hosted renderer and open-source code let teams bypass Scalar Docs entirely.
  • OpenAPI, AsyncAPI, and MCP expansion creates execution risk against ReadMe, Redocly, and Swagger.
  • If AI-doc tooling standardizes elsewhere, hosted docs revenue stalls and open-source cannibalizes paid plans.

What makes Scalar unique

  • Scalar bundles OpenAPI docs, API client, SDKs, and MCP servers in one platform.
  • Its MIT-licensed renderer keeps self-hosting free while monetizing Scalar Docs hosting.
  • September 2026 release adds localization, AsyncAPI parity, and CSP support for enterprise adoption.
