What believers are saying

  • U.S. retirement support adds compensation: Vanguard contributes 10% of salary to 401(k)s, plus a match up to 4%.
  • Lower fees support competitiveness: February 2026 cuts reached 84 Vanguard fund share classes across 53 funds.
  • Advisor custody is the next expansion: Vanguard agreed to acquire wealth platform Altruist in August 2026.

What critics are saying

  • Active strategies depend on partners: Vanguard uses over 20 outside managers, including Wellington and T. Rowe Price.
  • Cash awards depend on collective results: Vanguard's U.S. Partnership Plan links payments to company performance and client outcomes.
  • Stewardship faces binding limits: Vanguard's February 2026 Texas settlement restricts climate advocacy for specified U.S. fund holdings.

What makes Vanguard unique

  • Fund investors sit above the company: Vanguard is owned by its funds, which their shareholders own.
  • Costs stay exceptionally low: Vanguard's U.S. funds averaged 0.07% in asset-weighted expenses in 2025.
  • Index investors choose their voting approach: Vanguard Investor Choice applies selected policies to eligible fund shareholders' corporate votes.

$500K in VOO puts $40,400 into NVIDIA alone as top 10 holdings hit 37.78%

A $500,000 position in the Vanguard S&P 500 ETF (VOO) puts $40,400 into NVIDIA alone, as the chipmaker made up 8.08% of the fund on August 31, 2026. The fund's top 10 holdings account for 37.78%, or $188,900. The S&P 500 weights companies by market value, so NVIDIA's growth lifted its share automatically. Its stock rose 1,005.49% over five years to October 9, 2026, while VOO rose 90.68%. Concentration brings swings. A 2% weekly drop in NVIDIA on that slice costs about $808, roughly five years of VOO's $150 annual fee at 0.03%. Investors who also hold NVIDIA shares or a tech fund may face higher exposure than the fund's weight suggests.

Council for Economic Education launches National Investment Challenge with Vanguard's My Classroom Investor simulation

The Council for Economic Education has launched the National Investment Challenge, a new competition designed to teach high school students foundational investing skills. The challenge will use Vanguard's free My Classroom Investor simulation, where students manage mock 30-year portfolios and respond to market shifts and unexpected events. Early access opens in November, with the competition starting in January 2027. It will include qualifying rounds, state rounds, and culminate in a national final in Philadelphia in May, with teams competing for cash prizes. In the simulation, students choose characters with financial goals and manage portfolios containing stocks, bonds, and ETFs. The programme aligns with CEE Standards and the CFA Investment Foundations exam, helping students build credential-ready skills whilst learning long-term investment principles.

Vanguard to acquire AI-forward wealth platform Altruist to expand financial advice reach

Vanguard has entered a definitive agreement to acquire Altruist, an AI-forward wealth technology and custody platform serving financial advisors. The deal, expected to close later this year pending regulatory approvals, aims to expand access to financial advice by enabling advisors to serve more clients efficiently. Vanguard first invested in Altruist in 2020 to increase competition in the registered investment advisor custody space. Following the acquisition, Altruist will operate as a standalone business, retaining its leadership, brand, and operating model whilst gaining access to Vanguard's resources and investment expertise. The transaction terms were not disclosed. Altruist will continue focusing on providing integrated technology solutions for independent financial advisors, combining custody services with portfolio management tools.
