Requirements
  • At least 5 years of experience in plumbing, heating, heating, ventilation, and air conditioning, or a related trade, with field or counter experience accepted.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of plumbing systems, fittings, fixtures, valves, and copper, polyvinyl chloride, cross-linked polyethylene, chlorinated polyvinyl chloride, and cast-iron pipe materials.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of hot-water and steam boiler systems, components, and controls.
  • Working knowledge of heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning systems, including forced-air furnaces, central air conditioning, heat pumps, and mini-split systems.
  • Proven troubleshooting skills across plumbing, heating, heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning, and boiler systems.
  • Ability to explain technical concepts clearly to any audience.
  • Ability to use point-of-sale and inventory-management software.
  • Ability to keep up with a fast-paced workload.
  • Ability to stand and walk frequently, interact with customers throughout the shift, and occasionally lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
  • Availability for required overtime and variable schedules based on business needs.
Responsibilities
  • Act as the primary technical expert at the counter for plumbing, heating, heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning, and boiler systems.
  • Assist customers and tradespeople in identifying parts, diagnosing issues, and selecting the correct products for their applications.
  • Take counter orders, answer product questions, and manage customer payments.
  • Provide prompt, helpful, and professional service to customers.
  • Diagnose and troubleshoot plumbing, heating, heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning, and boiler problems brought in by contractors and homeowners.
  • Interpret fault codes, error messages, and system symptoms across various manufacturers.
  • Guide customers, including non-professionals, through troubleshooting steps clearly and patiently.
  • Apply safety knowledge and identify when to refer work to a licensed professional.
  • Mentor and support junior counter sales associates in developing product knowledge and customer service skills.
  • Stay current on new products, manufacturer updates, and industry codes, and share knowledge with the team.
  • Collaborate with the General Manager on inventory needs and customer product feedback.
  • Assist with receiving and organizing inventory as needed.
Desired Qualifications
  • Prior counter sales or wholesale distribution experience.
  • Leadership or mentoring experience.
  • A plumbing, heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning, or related trade license or certification.
  • Familiarity with hydronic heating systems, including radiant-floor and baseboard applications.
