Requirements
  • A high school diploma or equivalent GED certification is required.
  • Three years of experience in law enforcement, as a correctional officer, or in comparable security work requiring firearms training, qualification, and carrying a firearm is required.
  • Candidates must successfully complete a psychological evaluation, medical exam, and background investigation.
  • Knowledge of law enforcement principles and practices, including methods and techniques for safety, security, and emergency services, is required.
  • Knowledge of the safe and lawful handling and use of firearms and defensive weapons is required.
  • Knowledge of defensive tactics and the application of non-lethal weapons to control volatile situations is required.
  • Proficiency in making sound observations, recalling facts, and maintaining security awareness of court facilities is required.
  • Customer service skills are required.
  • The ability to evaluate and respond to security problems swiftly and effectively with appropriate actions is required.
  • The ability to communicate orally and in writing with judges, court personnel, court security, and diverse individuals and groups visiting court facilities is required.
  • Candidates must successfully complete all training and certifications required by the current Arizona Code of Judicial Administration and specific court requirements.
  • A valid Arizona driver’s license is required at appointment.
  • First aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) certification must be acquired within the first six months of employment.
  • Candidates must successfully complete all training required by the Administrative Office of the Courts and the local court.
  • The role requires the physical ability to stand, walk, and sit for extended periods; apply restraining techniques and defensive tactics; respond to physical confrontations and emergencies; lift or carry up to 75 pounds; and bend, reach, kneel, crouch, crawl, and stoop as necessary.
Responsibilities
  • Provide an armed security presence on the public entrance floor as overwatch for entry security screening teams.
  • Patrol court facilities, including exterior perimeters, courtrooms, and public areas daily; monitor courtrooms, staff areas, and lobbies for unauthorized persons and packages; respond to requests for security services; and take appropriate action.
  • Address situations that may constitute or escalate into a disturbance or hazard in a court facility.
  • Respond to medical emergencies as a first responder by rendering first aid, performing CPR, and administering Narcan.
  • Carry and safely employ court-approved, issued firearms and other defensive weapons as situations dictate.
  • Serve as a security escort or security presence in a variety of court situations when directed.
  • Prepare and submit reports on security incidents.
  • Participate on the court emergency response team and follow established disaster and emergency response procedures.
  • Implement emergency procedures as directed and when appropriate.
  • Maintain a visible presence to deter disturbances and assist the public.
  • Operate screening equipment, including x-ray machines, walk-through metal detectors, and hand wands, as required.
  • Conduct physical searches of items presented for screening according to procedures.
  • Assist the security manager in ensuring the safety and security of court facilities.
  • Perform related duties, projects, and special assignments as assigned.
