Requirements
  • Completion of high school education or vocational school education, or one year of combined educational and commercial kitchen experience.
  • A current state-approved sanitation certificate is required within one year of hiring.
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing and perform basic arithmetic functions.
  • Ability to tolerate exposure to water and cleaning chemicals, higher-than-normal noise levels, and commercial-kitchen heat and humidity.
  • Adequate physical strength and coordination to prepare, clean, and receive supplies while using standard food-service utensils and equipment.
  • Ability to safely lift and move 50 pounds, work from a step stool, walk and stand for prolonged periods, bend, reach, pull, and push.
  • Ability to manipulate utensils and equipment repetitively for variable periods, up to 70% of an assigned shift.
  • Ability to move between kitchens, dining areas, and other campus food-service areas.
  • Good vision, sensory ability to taste and smell, good personal hygiene, and compliance with clean-uniform and public-health standards.
Responsibilities
  • Clean and sanitize dishes, pots, pans, silverware, glasses, equipment, and kitchen utensils.
  • Maintain the dishwashing station, three-compartment sink, and related areas.
  • Ensure equipment is clean and working, and report issues to management.
  • Work with student work coordinators to train, instruct, and develop competent workers.
  • Assist with cleaning and organizing refrigerators and freezers and with taking inventories.
  • Assist with cleaning and sanitizing dining rooms and service areas, including routine floor maintenance.
  • Restock service ware and replenish empty service containers during busy meal periods.
  • Communicate accurately, professionally, and promptly, including labeling and dating foods.
  • Assist culinary staff with food preparation tasks such as chopping, cleaning, peeling, and other basic culinary techniques.
  • Work collaboratively with the Dining Room Coordinator and Student Manager to develop student workers.
  • Work cooperatively with the Area Manager, staff, and students to ensure orderly and efficient operations.
  • Review and understand departmental notices.
  • Use email and college computer access responsibly.
  • Attend departmental meetings and training workshops as requested.
  • Participate in preparing and serving special events as needed.
  • Complete required payroll and scheduling forms within established deadlines.
  • Perform other related or relevant tasks.
  • Initiate teamwork, collaboration, and cooperation between co-workers.
