Requirements
  • Possession of a Class A commercial driver's license with Tanker Endorsement or ability to obtain it within 6 months.
  • Possession of a Class II Wastewater Collection license or ability to obtain it within 18 months.
  • Possession of a Class C Water Distribution Operator's License.
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Two years of relevant vocational or technical school in plumbing or a related field, or two years of experience in water utility or meter operations, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Knowledge of supervisory practices and principles.
  • Knowledge of water utility operations, policies, procedures, and ordinances.
  • Knowledge of specifications for all meter sizes and metering sites, metering functions, and related terminology.
  • Skill in maintaining and repairing water meters.
  • Skill in communicating policies and procedures.
  • Skill in quickly diagnosing malfunctioning meters and determining resolutions.
  • Ability to understand and visualize combined metering scenarios.
  • Ability to lift or exert forces equivalent to lifting up to 100 pounds.
  • Ability to work in confined spaces under extreme weather conditions.
  • Ability to respond to scheduled on-call assignments and work extended periods during emergency assignments.
  • Ability to operate a personal computer, calculator, two-way radio, jackhammer, port-a-power winch, and acetylene torch.
  • Ability to perform physical activities including carrying, data entry, dragging, driving, holding, kneeling, lifting, pulling, pushing, seeing, sitting, sorting, squatting, standing, stooping, and twisting.
  • Ability to prepare for and cope with passive and active environmental hazards.
  • Ability to pass a criminal background check, physical examination, human performance evaluation, motor vehicle review, and drug and alcohol screening.
Responsibilities
  • Coordinate crew activities daily to complete assigned work orders and act as lead in repairing, replacing, or adjusting meters.
  • Perform maintenance services on automated meter infrastructure, including diagnosing issues, repairing infrastructure, and replacing infrastructure.
  • Perform repairs and preventive maintenance on water and wastewater infrastructure, including water mains, water services, water taps, fire hydrants, valves, sewer mains, sewer services, manholes, and cleanouts.
  • Lead crews in repairing, replacing, or adjusting small- to medium-size meters 2 inches and greater in size.
  • Perform meter accuracy testing, pressure and flow testing, and installation or replacement of meter vaults.
  • Conduct scheduled preventive maintenance services and aged meter replacements.
  • Investigate service connection problems and resolve customer complaints.
  • Spot-check the work and job sites of led employees.
  • Supervise multiple subordinates, including hiring, disciplining, evaluating, and training them.
  • Assist the Meter Services Crew Chief with tasks related to large meters.
  • Perform chlorine residual testing, resize service connections, and assist Meter Reading with safe access to metering sites.
  • Assist other meter service workers with difficult tasks as directed.
  • Perform emergency repairs and preventive services on water and wastewater infrastructure, including water services, automated meter infrastructure, fire hydrants, valves, and manholes.
