SteamDB sold to Nexus Mods, sparking monetization and paywall concerns

SteamDB has been acquired by Nexus Mods after over a decade of independently tracking Steam games, player counts, and pricing history. Creator Pavel Djundik cited burnout from the increasing workload as the reason for selling, stating he struggled to find a trusted team to continue the project. Djundik reassured users that SteamDB will remain unchanged, with the acquisition providing more resources and long-term stability. He will stay involved during the transition. The sale has sparked concerns amongst users about potential paywalls and monetisation, particularly following Nexus Mods' own ownership change in June 2025. Players worry features like the Price History tracker and Steam Charts could be restricted. Djundik pushed back against these concerns, stating everything currently free on SteamDB will remain free.

Nexus Mods acquires SteamDB, features to remain free for now.

Nexus Mods acquires SteamDB, features to remain free for now. Wednesday, September 2nd 2026 In a turn of events the gaming community didn't quite expect, the popular game modding website Nexus Mods has acquired SteamDB, one of the largest Steam tracking databases. According to the announcement, SteamDB has been run solely by developer Pavel "xPaw" Djundik, who founded the website and has been its sole operator for the last 13 years since it started back in 2013. Interestingly, the founder has reportedly been looking for a new owner, as the burden of maintaining the website has depended on constant donations from the community, which has been generous enough to let the project survive for more than a decade. Nexus Mods is mainly viewing the SteamDB acquisition as a source of high-quality data, which will help the company gather information about popular game versions, common PC configurations, and which game releases are trending at any given time, ensuring the modding community stays ready. According to the announcement, everything currently existing within SteamDB will remain free, with no added monetization. There will also be no ads on the website, similar to the current setup. However, Nexus Mods confirmed that they will introduce additional features that will require payments to use on the newly acquired website. Techpowerup will likely have to wait several months to see these new features and to determine how well the acquisition is managed under Nexus Mods. Since the company is capable of working with a large team and a massive online community, Techpowerup hope that things will only continue to improve. Finally, it is worth noting that the majority of websites like SteamDB often rely on a single founder to keep operating, so it is beneficial to have a dedicated team help maintain this precious gaming community resource. xPaw will work with Nexus Mods during the transitional period to ensure operations remain smooth. I understand a single dev wanting to share the load and NM isn't even close to the worst choice they could have made.
