GLP-1s and breast cancer: 5 things to know. By: Ella Jeffries Emerging research has linked GLP-1 medicines to a lower risk of breast cancer and better outcomes among people diagnosed with the disease. Here are five findings from studies highlighted in an Aug. 20 Breastcancer.org report: * Lower breast cancer risk. A study of more than 110,000 women ages 45 to 80 with obesity found those taking a GLP-1 had about a 30% lower risk of developing breast cancer. Another study of nearly 230,000 people found GLP-1 users had a 41% lower risk of obesity-related cancers, including breast cancer. * Lower risk of metastasis. A study of more than 10,200 people with stage I, II or III lung, breast, colorectal or liver cancer found those who started GLP-1 medicines after diagnosis had a lower risk of their cancer spreading to other parts of the body. * Fewer treatment complications. Among nearly 62,000 people with breast cancer who underwent a mastectomy, GLP-1 users had a 63% lower risk of lymphedema. * Lower mortality. One study found women with breast cancer taking a GLP-1 were 60% less likely to die from any cause, including breast cancer, over the 10-year follow-up period. Experts cautioned that missing data could have affected the results. * Improved DCIS outcomes. Among people with hormone receptor-positive ductal carcinoma in situ, or DCIS, GLP-1 users had a 74% lower risk of progression to invasive or metastatic cancer. Researchers cautioned that the study had an unexpectedly high number of metastatic cancers, raising questions about the accuracy of the DCIS diagnoses. All of the studies were retrospective, and participants were taking GLP-1s because they had diabetes, obesity or both. So far, studies have not examined cancer risk or outcomes among GLP-1 users without diabetes or obesity. U.S. News releases 2026-27 cancer hospital rankings. Aug 6, 2026 U.S. News & World Report has released its annual rankings of hospitals for 2026-27, including national rankings of the top 50 cancer centers and a new regional cancer ranking category. This year's five best cancer hospitals remained unchanged from the 2025-26 list. The top five hospitals are: * University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center (Houston) * Memorial Sloan Kettering (MSK) Cancer Center (New York) * Dana-Farber Brigham Cancer Center (Boston) * Mayo Clinic (Rochester, Minnesota) * Massachusetts General Hospital (Boston) MD Anderson has retained the top ranking for the past 12 years. It has been one of the top two hospitals in the nation for cancer care since the inaugural survey was published in 1990. "This ranking is a tremendous honor, and it reflects its unwavering commitment to continue making progress in its mission to end cancer," said MD Anderson President Peter WT Pisters, MD, in a statement. "We are deeply grateful to everyone who made this recognition possible: our faculty and staff, volunteers, donors, and the patients and families we are honored to serve." Similarly, MSK held its No. 2 spot atop a list that leans heavily on Northeastern cancer centers. It, too, has retained its place among the top cancer hospitals since the survey began. Ben Harder, the magazine's managing editor and chief of health analysis, said that the additional rankings aimed to reach patients who may not live near one of the top 50 cancer centers. "There are others who may not live in a community with one of those hospitals or may not realize that there's great oncology care in their backyard," Harder told Oncology News Central. The regional lists use the same scoring as the national ranking, he said. Harder said the expansion followed years of tracking outcomes at hospitals just outside the national top 50.
