Requirements
  • At least two years of experience in court reporting.
  • Certification as a National Court Reporters Association Registered Professional Reporter (NCRA RPR) or equivalent (state certification, NVRA CVR, CSR, or other licensure)
  • Must provide proper credentials within one week upon request of the client
  • Must report legal proceedings accurately at speeds of 225 words per minute and translate takedown from steno to English
  • Working knowledge of legal and medical terminology, correct grammar, spelling, punctuation, and basic mathematics theories and principles
  • Knowledge of laws, rules, and regulations governing court reporting and transcription activities, and of policies and procedures
  • Ability to use court reporting and transcription equipment
  • Knowledge of general office practices, procedures, equipment, and technology
  • Compliance with National Court Reporters Association professional standards
  • Maintaining exhibits and documentary evidence
  • Effective communication with counsel, coworkers, supervisors, and the public
  • Consecutive employment in a position with comparable responsibilities within the past five years
  • Proficiency in using a computer to communicate via email; proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and related tools
  • Ability to meet milestones and delivery schedules; conduct oneself professionally and ethically
  • Technical proficiency to speak, understand, read and write English fluently
  • Competence to produce accurate, timely, bound, indexed transcribed testimony with appropriate equipment
  • Proficiency in reading transcripts during proceedings and clarifying inaudible statements if asked
  • Notable preferred experience: experience with Administrative Investigation Board processes, Equal Opportunity Hearing, MSPB, or arbitration hearings
  • Competence to administer oaths; depositions transcribed by a notary
  • Flexibility to accommodate client turnaround requests
  • High school diploma or equivalent; completion of apprentice and internship training in court reporting; sufficient coursework to obtain certification as a professional court reporter
  • Licensing requirements include: NCRA RPR, NVRA CVR, Board of Court Reporting of the Judicial Council of Virginia certification, Real-time certification, Notary license, Valid driver's license, U.S. citizenship, Excellent oral and written communication, Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Adobe; ability to obtain Facility Access Authorization; security clearances may be required
  • Travel: occasional travel within specified Virginia area; location: Norfolk, Virginia and surrounding areas
Responsibilities
  • Accurately reporting legal proceedings at speeds of 225 words per minute and translating takedown from steno to English
  • Maintain exhibits and documentary evidence and ensure transcripts are properly bound and indexed
  • Transcribe depositions as conducted by a duly authorized notary; administer oaths when required
  • Ensure timely delivery of work products and meet milestones and client turnaround requirements
  • Communicate effectively with counsel, coworkers, supervisors, and the public
  • Be punctual, professional, and prepared with necessary equipment and materials for proceedings
  • Be present at relevant proceedings and attend in person or virtually as required
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience with Administrative Investigation Board processes, Equal Opportunity Hearing, Human Resources Management Merit System Protection Board, or arbitration hearings
  • Notary or real-time transcription certifications beyond minimum requirements
  • Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Office tools and Adobe Acrobat
