X-Energy, AEP and Amazon to assess 960MW Indiana nuclear project at ex-coal site

X-Energy, American Electric Power and Amazon have agreed to assess a 960MW advanced nuclear project in Indiana using X-Energy's Xe-100 small modular reactors. The project would reuse a former coal plant site in Sullivan County. Amazon would fund development and commit to a long-term power purchase. The next test is whether the study leads to a final investment decision. Regulatory steps, site approvals or a construction timeline would show if the concept becomes a contracted project. X-Energy has a market cap of $4.3 billion. It reported revenue of $150.28 million and a loss of $448.87 million.

X Energy (XE) could be 16% undervalued as valuation views split.

X Energy (XE) could be 16% undervalued as valuation views split. October 20, 2026 X-Energy (XE) sits in focus as investors weigh a nuclear technology story with US$150.28 million in revenue, a reported net loss of US$448.87 million, and a recent share price of US$10.54. The recent pattern around X-Energy has been choppy, with a 1-day share price return of 1.74% offering a brief rebound after the stock fell 17.14% over 7 days and declined 63.90% year to date. This points to fading momentum despite the nuclear technology story. Scan beyond X-Energy and size up other nuclear-focused plays with its handpicked 16 nuclear energy infrastructure stocks, which is shaping the next wave of power infrastructure. Bulls see X-Energy as a nuclear growth story that has been temporarily knocked off course. Bears point to the heavy losses and the steep year-to-date slide. Which side do the current valuation markers lean toward next? Preferred Price-to-Sales of 20.2x: Is it justified? X-Energy closed at $10.54, and on current revenue that translates into a P/S of 20.2x, which screens as rich compared with both peers and the wider US electrical equipment space. P/S looks at how much investors are paying for each dollar of sales. For a business like X-Energy that is still loss-making, this metric often becomes the main shorthand for how much faith the market has in the revenue story when earnings are not yet in the picture. Here, that shorthand is loud. X-Energy trades on a P/S of 20.2x while the US electrical industry sits at 2x and the peer average is 11.6x. The fair P/S level implied by the SWS model is 0.8x, which is far lower and signals a price level the market could move toward if enthusiasm for the nuclear technology story cools or revenue delivery does not keep pace with high expectations. Result: Price-to-sales of 20.2x (OVERVALUED) Still, the X-Energy story carries clear pressure points, including the sizeable US$448.87 million loss and a rich P/S. This leaves little cushion if sentiment cools. Another view: DCF puts X-Energy in A different light. The rich 20.2x P/S ratio presents X-Energy as expensive, yet the SWS DCF model suggests a different perspective. On that framework, the stock at $10.54 trades about 15.5% below an estimated future cash flow value of $12.47, which frames X-Energy as undervalued from this standpoint. Both views use real numbers yet tell very different stories about risk and potential reward. Nuclear power plant plans are set for 2 Indiana counties. Could Allen County be next?

Nuclear power plant plans are set for 2 Indiana counties. Could Allen County be next? Posted: Oct 19, 2026 / 06:30 PM EDT Updated: Oct 19, 2026 / 06:30 PM EDT FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) - As another Indiana community prepares to potentially welcome a nuclear energy plant, where does Allen County stand? Amazon, X-energy and American Electric Power, AEP, announced Monday they are partnering to explore building a 960-megawatt advanced nuclear energy plant in Sullivan County, located in southwest Indiana. The 12-unit development would consist of X-energy's small modular reactor, SMR, technology and could create more than 1,000 construction jobs, as well as more than 100 permanent positions. It is expected to be operable for 60 years. According to a press release sent out by AEP, this plant, which would be run by AEP with early-stage Amazon funding, would be one of the largest carbon-free energy investments in the state's history, with the potential to power nearly one gigawatt of energy to the power grid. That electricity could power 780,000 homes without costing existing customers extra, AEP estimates. The push for nuclear power. The way this energy is extracted looks similar to a gumball machine, according to Ben Reinke, X-Energy's Deputy Chief Commercial Officer. In a promotional video addressing frequently asked questions that Amazon sent to WANE 15, Reinke explains how nuclear power plants operate. Pebbles enter the top of the reactor. The uranium from those rocks generates heat and that energy is extracted when helium pushes past the pebbles. That heat is sent into a steam turbine to turn a turbine, which generates the power. Stephanny Smith, Director of Communications and Engagement with I&M, believes this method of powering local grids may be the best long-term solution sought for Indiana. "The future of energy really is nuclear," she said. "Our demand for energy is growing in our state in our region," Smith said. "We have some of the larger customers coming in but also our state is just really growing in general and so nuclear energy provides large amounts of consistent reliable clean energy. Right now, there are no nuclear power plants in the state, though some Hoosier homes are being powered by the Cook Nuclear Plant in Southwest Michigan, run by AEP. Smith said the Sullivan County plant would be the first of its kind for Indiana. That is, if it's approved before another nuclear plant proposed for Spencer County near Evansville. Both plant announcements follow Indiana Governor Mike Braun's encouragement to establish nuclear energy in Indiana. In July, he launched the Indiana Advanced Nuclear Ready Communities Program, designed to get communities ready to welcome SMRs. Sullivan and Spencer County are both active in this program. "Indiana is building an energy future that prioritizes affordability for Hoosier families and businesses while driving economic growth. The decision by I&M/AEP, Amazon and X-energy to explore this technology in one of Indiana's counties represents the kind of innovation and investment that can deliver lasting benefits for our state. This project has the potential to create well-paying jobs in Sullivan County, strengthen our electric grid and further position Indiana as a national leader in advanced nuclear energy," Braun stated in I&M's press release. Where Allen County stands on the nuclear question. WANE 15 reached out to the City of Fort Wayne, the Allen County Board of Commissioners and the City of New Haven to find out if they were applying for the state-led program to become "nuclear ready." A spokesperson for the board told WANE 15 no steps towards nuclear readiness are being taken at this time. Another spokesperson for Fort Wayne Mayor (D) Sharon Tucker's office told WANE 15 there have been no actions taken and it is continuing to review the program; the same response the office gave in July. "We're always looking at what's best for Fort Wayne's long-term energy future and economic growth. Our team is reviewing the state's program to understand what it would mean for our community, our workforce, and our infrastructure. We haven't made any decisions, but we believe in staying at the table for conversations that could bring investment and good jobs to our region," the mayor's office spokesperson told WANE 15. The City of New Haven, however, is exploring alternate power potentials. A spokesperson sent WANE 15 a statement explaining Mayor Steve McMichael (R) and some of his staff are at the Global Nuclear Energy Economic Summit in Indianapolis to learn more about nuclear energy, emerging technologies, and economic development opportunities. "The next industrial revolution is taking shape, and communities need to be prepared to compete for the jobs and investments of tomorrow," said Mayor Steve McMichael. "Our responsibility is to understand the opportunities, ask the right questions, and make sure New Haven is part of the conversation." At least one session of Indiana's Nuclear Ready Communities has been held in New Haven. The city will host another on November 4, 2026, at 5:30 p.m. at the New Haven Community Center.

Amazon backs 960MW Indiana nuclear plant with 12 X-energy reactors on former coal site

Amazon will fund a proposed 960-megawatt nuclear plant in Indiana and be the first customer to buy its power, the companies announced Monday. American Electric Power (AEP) would operate the plant, and X-energy, a designer of small modular nuclear reactors, would supply 12 Xe-100 reactors. The plant would sit on the site of a demolished coal plant just south of Terre Haute. It would connect to the public grid, though Amazon says the power would also serve its data centres. The deal is the second between Amazon and X-energy, and three times larger than the first. Amazon led a $700 million Series C-1 round in X-energy in October 2024. The companies plan 5 gigawatts of new US nuclear capacity by 2039. The timeline depends on X-energy delivering its first plant, at Seadrift in Texas, where it has yet to break ground.
