Requirements
  • U.S. citizenship is required.
  • An active Top Secret/Sensitive Compartmented Information clearance is required.
  • The candidate must be able to obtain Department of Homeland Security suitability before starting employment.
  • At least 2 years of directly relevant experience in cyber defense analysis using current technologies and standard cyber defense tools is required.
  • Experience developing and deploying signatures is required.
  • Experience detecting host- and network-based intrusions using intrusion detection technologies such as Snort is required.
  • Experience implementing incident-handling methodologies is required.
  • Experience implementing protocol analyzers is required.
  • Experience collecting data from a variety of cyber defense resources is required.
  • Experience reading and interpreting signatures such as Snort signatures is required.
  • Experience performing packet-level analysis is required.
  • Experience conducting trend analysis is required.
  • A Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science, Cyber Security, Computer Engineering, or a related field, or a high school diploma plus 4+ years of network investigations experience, is required.
Responsibilities
  • Characterize and analyze network traffic to identify anomalous activity and potential threats to network resources.
  • Coordinate with enterprise-wide cyber defense staff to validate network alerts.
  • Document and escalate incidents, including event history, status, and potential impact, for further action.
  • Perform cyber defense trend analysis and reporting.
  • Perform event correlation using information gathered from enterprise sources to gain situational awareness and determine the effectiveness of an observed attack.
  • Provide daily summary reports of network events and activity relevant to cyber defense practices.
  • Receive and analyze network alerts from enterprise sources and determine possible causes.
  • Provide timely detection, identification, and alerting of possible attacks, intrusions, anomalous activities, and misuse activities, distinguishing incidents and events from benign activity.
  • Use cyber defense tools for continuous monitoring and analysis of system activity to identify malicious activity.
  • Analyze identified malicious activity to determine exploited weaknesses, exploitation methods, and effects on systems and information.
  • Identify and analyze anomalies in network traffic using metadata.
  • Validate intrusion detection system alerts against network traffic using packet analysis tools.
  • Identify network-device applications and operating systems based on network traffic.
  • Reconstruct malicious attacks or activity from network traffic.
  • Identify network mapping and operating-system fingerprinting activities.
  • Assist in constructing signatures for cyber defense network tools in response to new or observed threats within the network environment or enclave.
Desired Qualifications
  • Python programming experience is desired.
  • A strong mathematics and science background is desired.
  • Experience with the Carnegie Mellon SiLK tool suite is desired.
  • One or more of the following professional certifications is desired: GNFA, GCIH, GCIA, GSEC, CASP+, CySA+, PaLMS, or FedVTE.
  • GSEC (SANS401), ArcSight or another SIEM solution, Network+, and Security+ are desired.
