Santos will oversee consumer deposits, credit cards, business banking, and auto lending. Van Beurden will focus on scaling AI adoption across the bank, including deepening its work with AI firms. Wall Street fears AI agents will drain bank deposits, but analysts say risk is overdone

Wall Street fears AI agents could pull deposits from banks, but leading analysts and executives say the risk is overblown. Bank stocks have fallen since Meta Platforms launched its Muse personal agent on September 8: Bank of America is down 18%, Charles Schwab 14%, Wells Fargo 6%, and JPMorgan Chase 5%. Agents can compare yields and recommend options, which could erode the inertia that keeps customers' money in place. If deposits move, banks may have to pay more interest, squeezing profits. Analysts Mike Mayo and Gerard Cassidy say trust matters more to customers than slightly higher returns. A Deloitte survey found 72% of bank customers hesitate to share financial data with generative AI tools. Third-quarter earnings showed no clear shift in deposits.
