Requirements
  • A high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Current pharmacy technician licensure or permit as required by the state board where services are provided.
  • National certification as a pharmacy technician through the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board or National Healthcareer Association, or, for applicants with at least two years of pharmacy-specific experience, certification obtained within 15 months of hire.
  • Ability to walk and stand or sit for long periods of time.
  • Ability to lift 30 pounds and push 50 pounds.
  • Finger, hand, and reaching dexterity.
Responsibilities
  • Assist with drug distribution activities that do not require a pharmacist’s professional judgment under standard written procedures and pharmacist supervision.
  • Read physicians’ orders, prepare and deliver medications, and order and deliver drug supplies for patient-care units.
  • Prepare medications for dispensing, including unique dosage forms for all patient populations.
  • Use pharmaceutical and medical terms, abbreviations, and symbols commonly used in prescribing and dispensing medications.
  • Interpret medication lists to replenish patients’ medications and deliver them to patient-care areas according to schedule.
  • Prepare and deliver controlled substances accurately and maintain the required records.
  • Take inventory, analyze medication supplies, replace outdated or deteriorated medications, and replenish depleted inventory.
  • Label products appropriately.
  • Perform arithmetic calculations for dosage determinations used in medication and solution preparation.
  • Perform an initial check of prescribed doses for appropriateness based on patient weight and age.
  • Prepare and label prepackaged medications based on usage patterns and prepackaging requirements, and maintain related records.
  • Maintain inventory and supplies in assigned pharmacy service areas.
  • Answer telephone calls and direct them to the appropriate individual.
  • Keep pharmacy service and drug storage areas clean and orderly.
  • Assist with training pharmacy technicians.
  • Follow state and federal restrictions governing duties that may be performed only by pharmacists.
  • Assist with sterile preparation of intravenous-room medications and maintain and clean the intravenous room.
  • Prepare intravenous admixtures, including pediatric dilutions, injectable preparations, and sterile irrigating solutions, using aseptic technique.
  • Enter information related to parenteral admixtures and injectable products into pharmacy intravenous computer systems.
  • Manage controlled substances for the health system.
Desired Qualifications
  • An associate degree, post-high-school education in a science field of study, or graduation from a pharmacy technician training program.
  • National pharmacy technician certification through the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board or National Healthcareer Association upon hire.
