About the job

Requirements
  • Must recognize and understand the carpet defects listed on the defect code sheet.
  • Must adhere to the corporate attendance policy and notify the previous shift supervisor personally about an imminent absence 1 to 2 hours before shift change, including the reason.
  • Must work all scheduled shift hours, weekends, 12-hour shifts, and holidays as necessary.
Responsibilities
  • Make grading decisions according to established quality standards and assist inspectors on both continuous finishing lines with difficult grading calls.
  • Provide on-the-spot training and feedback to support consistent inspection and grading practices.
  • Communicate with quality, supervisors, operators, and team members to ensure proper product handling; serve as a liaison between inspectors and supervisors when grading discrepancies arise.
  • Document inspection findings, track trends and recurring quality issues, and submit flashbacks with photos for carpet downgraded on the line.
  • Identify and report issues that may affect product quality as part of continuous improvement efforts.
  • Continuously observe carpet on the inspection table for tufting, yarn, and backing defects.
  • For yarn defects, hold rolls for review when defects are 75 feet or more; for defects under 75 feet, downgrade according to the grading system and make a 9-by-9-inch representative cut for technical evaluation. Perform a streak evaluation on a 1-to-10 scale; carpet rated 5 or higher is acceptable for shipment if there are no other defects, while lower-rated carpet is held or downgraded according to defect length.
  • Identify dye streaks, off-shade areas, wrinkles, dye spots, smears, and other dye-process defects; hold carpet when dye problems would cause a short first or off-quality grade.
  • Identify coating defects, inform the inspector clerk so the roll ticket can be noted, hold rolls for repair when possible, and downgrade or cut out unrepairable defects.
  • Assign the proper hold code for observed defects and communicate issues promptly to the supervisor and responsible party.
  • Escalate off-quality downgrades exceeding 100 feet and mark the affected area with tape when possible.
  • Check each seam, remove loose secondary backing while minimizing scrap, and periodically inspect secondary backing and its application; report defects to the supervisor.
  • Check carpet for moisture and other defects; complete the flashback Google Doc and consult the supervisor when defects are observed.
  • Monitor carpet width using the digital readout, measure each MO with a tape measure, and notify the supervisor if the difference from the readout exceeds one-quarter inch.
  • Apply carpet width grading limits, record required width measurements on the ticket, and record width checks and quality flashbacks in the appropriate Google Doc.
  • Use the correct finished-style shear standard to visually evaluate shear level; hold rolls for re-shear when unacceptable, keep rolls with shear gouges or pulls unwrapped for re-shear, and notify the shearing machine operator of shear-quality problems.
  • Check the carpet backprint against the number on the specification sheet, using the computer screen or physical inspection as needed; notify the supervisor and hold carpet that is unprinted or incorrectly printed.
  • Perform inspector duties.
